Katie Ledecky’s roommate at the Olympics is setting records now, too.

Simone Manuel, who is sharing a room with Ledecky in the athletes’ village here, became the first African-American woman to win an individual event in Olympic swimming on Thursday night. She and Penny Oleksiak of Canada tied for the fastest time, an Olympic record in the women’s 100-meter freestyle: 52.70 seconds.

“I definitely think it raises some awareness and will get them inspired,” Manuel, 20, said about the significance of her accomplishment. “I mean, the gold medal wasn’t just for me. It was for people that came before me and inspired me to stay in the sport. For people who believe that they can’t do it, I hope I’m an inspiration to others to get out there and try swimming. You might be pretty good at it.”

Manuel and Oleksiak shaved 0.01 seconds off the Olympic standard of 52.71, set earlier in the Rio Games meet by Australia’s Cate Campbell. Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom won the bronze in 52.99.

The last time an American won gold in the event was 1984, when Nancy Hogshead and Carrie Steinseifer also tied and shared the gold medal with a time of 55.92 seconds.

Several black swimmers have won Olympic medals for the United States. The first female of African-American descent to make an American Olympic team was Maritza Correia, a member of the 400-meter freestyle relay team that won silver at the 2004 Athens Games.

Lia Neal, a Brooklyn native, won a bronze in a relay at the 2012 London Games and a silver in a relay here at the Rio Games.

Anthony Ervin and Cullen Jones, who are black, have won Olympic gold medals.

Also headlining the action will be Missy Franklin, who will compete as a professional for the first time, with the Rio Games next summer.

Phelps may boast 18 Olympic gold medals but at his last outing in May he finished outside the top two in all of his events — something that hadn’t happened to him since he competed at the Sydney Olympics as a 15-year-old.

He will test himself in five events here, with three of them — the 200m individual medley, 200m backstroke and 100m freestyle — all falling on Sunday.

He is hoping for a solid showing against elite swimmers before the August US championships in Texas.

He will sit out the World Championships in Russia at the same time as part of the sanction for the drunk-driving incident that saw him suspended for six months by USA Swimming.

The ban interrupted the comeback the 29-year-old launched in 2014 aimed at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Franklin is also gearing up for the global stage — worlds this year and the Rio Games.

The 20-year-old already has four gold medals from the 2012 London Olympics, but after graduating from high school she opted to compete for two years for the University of California, before turning pro this year and inking a deal with Speedo.

The meet will be her only long course competition before the World Championships.

On the opening night of competition, New Zealand’s Lauren Boyle cruised to victory in the 1500m free in 16min 03.73sec — nearly 30 seconds clear of the field. American Gillian Ryan was second in 16:33.74.

In contrast, American Michael McBroom won a close men’s 800m free, clocking 7:54.21 to edge compatriot Connor Jaeger (7:54.47).

Tunisia’s Ous Mellouli was third in 7:56.00.

Matthew Abeysinghe of Killer Whale Aquatics achieved a FINA ‘B’ qualifying time to secure his berth for the Kazan 2015 FINA World Championships at the selections trial concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

Matthew swam past the FINA ‘B’ qualifying time of 51.12 seconds completing the 100m Freestyle, as he clocked 50.87 seconds, while missing his own national record which he established last year at the Youth Olympic Games by a millisecond.
The achievement is significant, as he becomes the first Sri Lankan swimmer to achieve a FINA qualification time for the World Championships as opposed to previous Sri Lankan participation by universality places popularly known as ‘wildcards’.
“I am happy with this time since this trial was in the middle of the season and we swam without tapering. My target is to better this at the World Championships and try and get as close as possible to the ‘A’ and work at qualifying for Rio next year” said Matthew Abeysinghe of his performance.
The swimmer from Asian International School who trained under his father Manoj Abeysinghe, had renewed many national records over the years including records set by Julian Bolling more than 20 years ago, and had always showed that he is a far better swimmer than any other Sri Lankan swimmer in history.
Abeysinghe had won a bronze medal at the Asian Youth Games back in 2013 at Nanjing, China while represented Sri Lanka in the Youth Olympics last year, which was also held in Nanjing, China which are significant achievements in the history of Sri Lankan swimming.

The ‘B’ qualifying time is lesser than FINA’s ‘A’ standard and allows the entry of one swimmer in an event. With one swimmer having achieved this time, Sri Lanka will be entitled to a further quota of three universality places to be distributed between the sexes. Of this quota two other swimmers, Cherantha De Silva of Ananda College and Kimiko Raheem of Asian International School will be certain of their participation having been selected by FINA for the Targeting Rio 2016 Olympics Training Scholarship.
The two swimmers will shortly be leaving the island to commence full-time training under a FINA monitored programme till June next year along with other Asian Olympic hopefuls at the Thanyapura Training Centre in Phuket, Thailand. As part of their scholarship conditions the swimmers will automatically be eligible to swim at Kazan 2015.
The Selection Trials will also serve as the trial to select swimmers for the 5th FINA World Youth Swimming Championships to be held in Singapore in August.
Matthew is the brother of South Asian Games gold medalist swimmer Andrew Abeysinghe and has two younger brothers Dillon and Kyle who too excel in the local swimming arena.
The Olympic ‘B’ Qualifying standards are 50.70 seconds and Abeysinghe is well on the road to go beyond that with the competition in the WC at Russia.
FINA World Championship will be held from 5-16 August in Russia.
