British heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury has been stripped of one his world titles less than two weeks after winning it, the BBC reported on Wednesday.
Fury beat Wladimir Klitschko on points on Nov 28, taking the Ukrainian’s WBA, IBF, IBO and WBO belts.
The Briton was then obliged to fight the International Boxing Federation’s mandatory challenger Vyacheslav Glazkov, but Fury has instead chosen to face Klitschko in a rematch, the BBC reported.
“It’s true he’s been stripped of his IBF belt,” the BBC quoted IBF championships chairman Lindsey Tucker as saying.
“Our challenger was Vyacheslav Glazkov, but instead Fury’s gone and signed a rematch clause with Wladimir Klitschko.”
Fury has been embroiled in controversy in recent days after he compared homosexuality to pedophilia, triggering public outrage and a police investigation.

Deontay Wilder dropped Eric Molina three times before knocking him out in the ninth round on Saturday to retain his World Boxing Council heavyweight world title before delighted home fans in Birmingham, Alabama.

Wilder was making his first defence of the title he won in January, when he became the first American since Shannon Briggs in 2007 to claim a piece of the heavyweight world title.

The 29-year-old American improved to 34-0 with 33 wins inside the distance. His unanimous decision over Bermane Stiverne for the title on January 17 marked the only time he’s been taken a full 12 rounds, and on Saturday he lived up to his pledge to get back to the business of knockouts. A straight right from Wilder spun Molina around, with the following blows sending him sprawling and prompting referee Jack Reiss to signal that the fight was over at 1:03 of the round.

The Texan, who rattled the champ with a left hook in the third round, was knocked down by a left hook late in the fourth that sent him sprawling into the ropes. AFP

Floyd “Money” Mayweather has beaten Manny Pacquiao again: the undefeated US boxer leads his Filipino rival atop Forbes’ latest list of the world’s highest-paid sports figures.

Mayweather tops the list for the second year in a row with the majority of his US$300 million in earnings over the past 12 months coming from his May mega-fight with Pacquiao.
Thanks to his take from the fight, Pacquiao is second on the list released on Wednesday with US$ 160 million in earnings, joining Mayweather and Tiger Woods as the only sportsmen to earn nine figures in a 12-month period.
The highest-grossing fight in history, which generated US$ 400 million in US revenue, accounts for much of the US$460 million earnings increase on the 2015 list, Forbes said.
According to the financial magazine’s calculations –which take into account salaries, bonuses, prize money, appearance fees and estimated licensing and endorsement income – the top 100 earned a total of US$ 3.2 billion over the last 12 months.
Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo edged Barcelona rival Lionel Messi for third on the list, with Ronaldo coming in at US$ 79 million and Messi US$73.8 million.
Swiss tennis great Roger Federer rounded out the top five with total earnings of US$67 million.
Woods remains in the top 10 at number nine (US$50.6 million), despite the decline in his game that has seen his world ranking slide to 181.
The 14-time major champion’s old rival Phil Mickelson is the highest-paid golfer at eighth (US$50.8 million) – with reigning world number one Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland coming in at 12th.
The top 10 also features three NBA players: Le Baron James at sixth, Kevin Durant at seventh and Kobe Bryant at 10th.
Once again, Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova is the highest woman on the list at 26 – with total earnings of US$29.7 million.
World number one Serena Williams is the only other woman in the top 100 at number 47 (US$ 26.4 million)

Sivali Central College, Ratnapura was able to win their ninth L.V. Jayaweera Shield last week in the Mahanama College boxing ring.

However, a few years ago it looked as if Sivali boxing was heading towards calamity with boxing. A school that has produced numerous national level boxers was struggling to find their way to the top. Nevertheless within a matter of two years, they have been able to clinch back-to-back L.V. Jayaweera Shields (2014 and 2015); and this is how the school crowned the best in boxing of Sri Lanka turned things around to bounce back on to the summit.
Last week however was different. Sivali did win the 42nd L.V. Jayaweera Boxing Meet, but the manner in which they dominated the proceedings from the word go showed that they have turned out to be an unstoppable force with every single member of the squad winning medals. Talking to Ceylon Today the head coach, Chandimal Alexander revealed the story behind their success.
“We have to be honest about the fact that we were really struggling from 2009 to 2011. We hardly won anything during that period and that was a huge issue for all of us. We have won a lot of boxing tournaments and when we take part in events people expect us to win which we struggled to do in the above mentioned period,
“We were all hurt; the old boys, the former boxers of the school together we all decided we have to do something for the school. We met and discussed the issues we have in hand and how to overcome it. From the beginning of 2012 we started a programme to get things moving,
“We spoke to each and every young player of the school. First we organized a New Year festival to make sure everyone is happy and to identify each other well. Then we organized a coaching camp and a few a motivational sessions. I think all these worked in our favour and the results show that, “the former Sivali boxer said.
He also didn’t forget to thank a few old boys who had supported them financially.
“I think it wouldn’t have been possible if not for the support given by people like Thilanga Kumudusena, Dr. Mahinda Wasantha and Dr. Buddhika Ranasinghe who helped us immensely,’ he added.
Pubudu Kalpage who captained the side during their L.V. Jayaweera win said that working hard with a clear plan in their heads is what made them the winners of this tournament.

Floyd Mayweather cemented his status as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world with a unanimous decision over Manny Pacquiao as the “Fight of the Century” failed to live up to the hype here Saturday.

Scattered boos rang out around the crowd of 17,000 in the MGM Grand after Mayweather comfortably outboxed his Filipino rival to frustrate hopes of a full-blooded slugfest.

The 38-year-old Mayweather (48-0, 26 KOs) retained his WBC and WBA welterweight titles and seized Pacquiao’s WBO belt by winning the fight on all three of the judges’ scorecards.

Mayweather received scores of 116-112 from two judges. The third judge scored it 118-110.

But when the results were announced the pro-Pacquiao crowd booed lustily and tried to drown out Mayweather’s post-fight comments over the public address system.

Filipino star Pacquiao suffered the sixth loss of his career to go with 57 victories and two draws.

The fight is widely believed to be the most lucrative in boxing history with revenues of $400 million.

Pacquiao was the aggressor, pressing action from the first round and was able to land some big lefts on Mayweather’s chin, especially in the final seconds of the early rounds.

But ultimately Pacquiao wasn’t able to keep up his frenzied early pace for all 12 rounds and Mayweather, who was the bigger of the two fighters, managed to slip in counterpunches and hard right hands that stopped the Filipino in his tracks.

Mayweather reiterated after Saturday’s super fight that he would retire after his next fight in September which will fulfil his six-fight contract to Showtime Sports.

“My last fight is in September. I’ll do that and I will hang it up,” said Mayweather, estimated to have earned $200 million.

Pacquiao meanwhile insisted he thought he had won.

“I thought I won the fight. He didn’t do nothing,” he said.

The entrance of the fighters to the ring was delayed about 45 minutes because of problems with the heavy demand for pay-per-view telecast and the providers ability to distribute it.
