In yet another exhilarating end to the ‘All Island School Games Netball Championship 2016’ sponsored Airtel, Holy Family Convent Kurunegala continued their winning streak yet again by securing the overall title to be crowned as Airtels’ Netball champions of 2016 in both Under 19 and 17 age groups.

The Under 19 Familians were able to do so by beating Presbyterian B.V. Dehiwala (31-23). In the under 17 final HFC Kurunegala beat Hillwood Kandy 21-12.

In the first semi-finals between the Familians from Kurunegala and Kalutara in the Under-15 age group, HFC Kurunegala secured an easy win against its sister school while Maliyadeva B.V. Kurunegala proved to be the better team in the North Western Province when they beat HFC Kurunegala 14-12 in the finals.

Sacred Heart Convent’s dream of entering the finals was again shattered by Holy Family Convent Kurunegala who beat them by a large margin 33-8 to meet Presbyterian B.V- Dehiwala who showed some brilliant skills to be the only school in the Western Province to come into the final. This is also the first time that the Presbyterians were able to achieve this result.

The pair scored a combined 51 points as Australia eased to victory over a valiant South Africa outfit, who bettered their 35-point thumping against the Diamonds in the World Cup.

Goal attack Natalie Medhurst nailed a further 12 points before making way for debutant Stephanie Wood, who scored five.

The world champions went on the offensive from the get-go, repeatedly hitting Bassett with passes over the top from midcourters Kim Ravaillion and the returning Madi Robinson.

Bassett netted 16 of her 17 shots in the first quarter as the Diamonds raced to a nine-point lead.

At the other end of the court, goalkeeper Sharni Layton ensured the absence of skipper Laura Geitz didn’t impact too heavily on the side, marshalling from the back with authority and restricting limiting Proteas shooter Lenize Potgieter to eight points.

The match followed a similar pattern in the second quarter, as the Diamonds put their foot down.

Ravaillion and Robinson snared a combined 17 goal assists over the two quarters to take the Diamonds into the halftime break ahead 36-20.

Coach Lisa Alexander rung in the changes at the halftime break, introducing April Brandley into the defence and young gun Liz Watson as centre.

Bassett was also given a breather for the second half, swapped out for Thwaites after her 28-goal showing.

A closer third quarter ensued, with the Proteas limiting the third-quarter tally to 14-10.

Wood and fellow defensive debutant Kristiana Manu’a were both given their Diamonds debut in the fourth quarter as the Diamonds wound down the clock.

Thwaites, 29, finished her half on the court with a perfect 23 points from 23 shots.

Sri Lankan women suffered their third loss in a row while South Africa claimed the second spot in Pool C with a 89-17 victory against Sri Lanka in the ongoing Net Ball World Cup.

Playing a complete match in attack and defence, the SPAR Proteas dominated all over the court, using their speed and full-court defence to stifle the Sri Lankan attack, gaining 34 deflections and 25 intercepts.

Thishala Algama was a shining light for Sri Lanka up forward with defender Gayani Dissanayake, given the hard task of stopping Potgieter, taking a fantastic intercept in the opening quarter, pouncing on a loose South African pass.

Sri Lanka was comprehensively beaten 43-56 by the regional rivals Singapore in their opening match of the Netball World Cup which got underway in Sydney, Australia yesterday.

In a very competitive first quarter, both the teams tied with 12 points, but, the Asian champions clinched the second quarter 18-11 which saw them securing a 30-23 lead. Although Sri Lanka came back in third quarter with 11-9 win, Singapore sealed the deal with a thumping 17-9 victory in the last quarter.
Singapore goal shooter Charmaine Soh led the way for her side scoring 39 points while the goal attack Huifen Chen added 17 points.
Thisala Algama in the absence of Tharjini Sivalingam playing at goal shoot succeeded in 34 attempts out of the 39 her team created which shows that the islanders lack experience in the middle.
Sri Lanka will take on Malawi in their second match in group C today.

The final stage matches of the Schools Netball Championship for the MILO Trophy 2015 will start on 25, 26 and 27 July at Matale Bernard Aluvihare Grounds. The 24th edition of the MILO Trophy will feature over 400 teams from 120 schools participating in this tournament, and the preliminary round matches have already been concluded at 14 centres island-wide.
This was revealed by Sandamali Aviruppola, President of the SLSNA at a press briefing held at the Dutch Burger Union in Thummulla.
The tournament sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd for the 24th time will be conducted in two divisions A and B in age groups of under-14, 16 and 18 and under-13.
The main objective of the SLSNA is to improve the standard of the game and encourage outstation schools to participate. The added feature this year is that there is an increased participation of schools from the northern and eastern districts.
At the press conference held at Dutch Burger Union on Thursday, the head of Sri Lanka School Netball Association, Sandamali Aviruppola said: “I think every team that participates in the competition should have a fair chance of winning it.”
The players born in 2003 and 2004 are eligible to take part in the under-13 category, while players born in 2002 will be in the under-14 category. The students born in 2000 and 2001 will be entitled to play in the age group of under-16. The most senior age group, the under-18, will be for players born in 1998 and 1999, she said.
Last year, Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala dominated the tournament winning both the under-14 and under-16 age groups for the sixth consecutive year, while finishing third in the under-18 category.
