The Royal Crown, the highest achievement at Royal College Colombo for any sport has been awarded to their outstanding rugby player and number eight Supun Warnakulasooriya for his fabulous performance for the school and for his dedication and the contribution he made during the 2015 rugby season.

Arshad Jamaldeen was the last rugby player from the school to win the Royal Crown in 2012.

Along with this award Warnakulasooriya received his college rugby colours for the year 2015 for helping Royal win five trophies namely Bradby Shield (v Trinity), Michael Gunaratne trophy (v. S. Thomas’ ML), BC Anghie trophy (v St Peter’s), Major Milroy Fernando trophy (v Isipathana) and becoming League champions.

Royal College also had the distinction of clinching two other trophies – D.S. Senanayake trophy for winning the Royal-Thomian cricket encounter 2016 and the Bradby Shield for winning the Trinity-Royal rugby encounter 2015-16.

Incidentally Royal College won both these two trophies together after a lapse of 20 years. It is indeed a special occasion in their sporting history. – WA

Captaining Kandy Sports Club, Fazil Marija delivered a sensational display of rugby, scoring thrice in his side’s 50 (7-tries, 6-conversions, 1-penalty) -13 (2-tries, 1-penalty) win over Police Sports Club in their inter-club league rugby tournament match worked off at Police Park yesterday.
The lads from the hills who led 29-3 at breather, have now won all the three matches they played so far scoring 50 or more points.
Playing at centre for the first time this season, the former Kingswoodian scored twice in the first half and followed it up with another in the second half before being substituted in the 65th minute receiving a standing ovation from the visiting Kandy faithful.
The 30-year-old who was engaged to his fiancé earlier in the week, set up down the left flank by wing three quarter Richard Dharmapala for the first try while the other two were scored due to some individual brilliance of the former Sri Lankan captain, who sliced through the shaky Police defense.
Police took a gamble playing Mohamed Absal at centre, and he along with wing three quarter Chamara Dabare looked completely ineffective in the left.

Things got even worse for the hosts when Sharo Fernando was sent to the sin-bin in the 20th minute and later in the second half he was sent off for throwing punches at Kandy players. The players from both sides were involved in heated verbal exchanges and pushes right throughout the match resulting in four Kandy players namely, Heshan Kalhara, Damith Dissanayake, Buwaneka Udangamuwa and Thilina Wijesinghe receiving yellow cards.
Despite being able to draw first blood, the Cops could only manage two tries; that too scored deep into the second half with number eight, Bilal Hasan and scrum half Sudam Parinda getting into the score sheet once again.
Kandy wing three quarter Vishwamithra Jayasinghe who came off the bench in the second half added more misery on the struggling Policemen as he sprinted past quite a few Police defenders demonstrating his pace and proving the national selectors wrong when they snubbed him for the Sri Lanka Sevens squad a weeks ago.

Arshad Jamaldeen who was given the opportunity to play at fly half justified the decision with a strong performance touching down once in the first half and making six conversions out of the seven tries in addition to the three points added through a penalty.
Flankers Suhiru Anthony and Sashika Jayawardene were the other scorers for the winners.
Meanwhile, Havelock Sports Club defeated Navy Sports Club 16-13 at Welisara to remain unbeaten in the league competition while Army registered a 37-25 victory over Air Force at Diyagama.
