Captaining Kandy Sports Club, Fazil Marija delivered a sensational display of rugby, scoring thrice in his side’s 50 (7-tries, 6-conversions, 1-penalty) -13 (2-tries, 1-penalty) win over Police Sports Club in their inter-club league rugby tournament match worked off at Police Park yesterday.
The lads from the hills who led 29-3 at breather, have now won all the three matches they played so far scoring 50 or more points.
Playing at centre for the first time this season, the former Kingswoodian scored twice in the first half and followed it up with another in the second half before being substituted in the 65th minute receiving a standing ovation from the visiting Kandy faithful.
The 30-year-old who was engaged to his fiancé earlier in the week, set up down the left flank by wing three quarter Richard Dharmapala for the first try while the other two were scored due to some individual brilliance of the former Sri Lankan captain, who sliced through the shaky Police defense.
Police took a gamble playing Mohamed Absal at centre, and he along with wing three quarter Chamara Dabare looked completely ineffective in the left.

Things got even worse for the hosts when Sharo Fernando was sent to the sin-bin in the 20th minute and later in the second half he was sent off for throwing punches at Kandy players. The players from both sides were involved in heated verbal exchanges and pushes right throughout the match resulting in four Kandy players namely, Heshan Kalhara, Damith Dissanayake, Buwaneka Udangamuwa and Thilina Wijesinghe receiving yellow cards.
Despite being able to draw first blood, the Cops could only manage two tries; that too scored deep into the second half with number eight, Bilal Hasan and scrum half Sudam Parinda getting into the score sheet once again.
Kandy wing three quarter Vishwamithra Jayasinghe who came off the bench in the second half added more misery on the struggling Policemen as he sprinted past quite a few Police defenders demonstrating his pace and proving the national selectors wrong when they snubbed him for the Sri Lanka Sevens squad a weeks ago.

Arshad Jamaldeen who was given the opportunity to play at fly half justified the decision with a strong performance touching down once in the first half and making six conversions out of the seven tries in addition to the three points added through a penalty.
Flankers Suhiru Anthony and Sashika Jayawardene were the other scorers for the winners.
Meanwhile, Havelock Sports Club defeated Navy Sports Club 16-13 at Welisara to remain unbeaten in the league competition while Army registered a 37-25 victory over Air Force at Diyagama.

Sri Lanka will look to exploit the home advantage when the big boys from Asia scrum down for regional supremacy in the third leg of the Asian Seven Series which kicks off at the Race Course International Rugby Stadium in Colombo today.
Sri Lanka finished fourth in the two previous legs held in China and Thailand respectively.
In fact they defeated one of the tournament favourites, China in the second leg.

Sri Lanka Sevens captain, Fazil Marija said the win against China gives his team a lot of confidence.
“We proved that we can beat any team on our day. That win (against China) is a huge confidence booster for us and we look to carry the same form in this tournament as well,” the skipper told Ceylon Today in an interview.
The dynamic fly half also revealed that the team has been preparing very well for the tournament.
“The guys have been practising well and we have gathered some experience in the last two legs and we hope that will help us in this tournament. We believe that we can make it to the final in front of our fans,” the Kandy legend said.
Having to play in Colombo in front of the home crowd could of course put some pressure on the Tuskers, but Marija claimed that his men are ready to take it on a positive manner.

“The pressure is always there, no matter if you are playing at home or away, but I do admit there is an extra bit of pressure when you are playing in front of your fans because you don’t want to let them down.
As a team we have to take it in a positive way,” the former Kingswood back said.
Marija believed that Japan would be the toughest opponent for his side during the tournament.
“Japan is obviously the toughest team, but Hong Kong, Korea and China too are difficult teams to beat. We want be underestimating China just because we beat them once,” he added.
Fazil Marija will quit captaincy at the end of this tournament

Sri Lanka sevens skipper Fazil Marija has decided to step down from the sevens captaincy after the Asian Sevens Series third and final leg slated to be held this weekend at Race Course.
One of the best products of Kingswood College, Kandy, Sri Lanka’s number one fly half has led the Sri Lanka team from 2012 for four Asian Sevens Series.

Marija speaking to Ceylon Today said after this final Asian Sevens leg, he will be available as a player, but not as the captain. “Now it is time to give an opportunity for an upcoming young player to take over the captaincy role,” he said.
Under his captaincy Sri Lanka’s best achievement came in 2012 by winning three plate titles and finished overall third place in 2013 at Asian Sevens Series. That was the year where Sri Lanka also got an opportunity to participate at the IRB Hong Kong Sevens in 2014 after four years.

Kandy fly half Marija (29) believed players like Sudarshana Muthuthanthri and Srinath Sooriyabandara have enough experience and qualities to handle the captaincy role. “Both played with me and they have a good knowledge about the game” said Marija.
He has once again been appointed to lead the defending league and knock out champions Kandy Sports Club for the upcoming rugby 2015 and 2016 league tournament, which is scheduled to be kicked-off from third week of November.
Marija further said did his best and also shared his knowledge with all young players to make a better team for the nation. As the captain his final wish is to reach the Cup final of the coming tournament, after Sri Lanka finished fourth in both previous legs in China and Thailand.

Kandy SC, defending league and knockout champions, will commence training this week with the idea of fielding a match winning side for the forthcoming rugby season.
Some of the seniors will bid good bye and some fresh prospects are due to join the club.
Once again South African born Johan Taylor, who guided the club and the Sri Lanka team last season well, will be there in time to take over coaching. He also coached Royal College and coached the country twice to win Asian tournaments.
As a qualified coach he has groomed last year’s Kandy SC skipper Sean Wijesinghe as a coach, and it will be Sean, who is following Johan’s footsteps, who will be helping in coaching.
Former captain and the present Sri Lanka captain Fazil Marija, as this writer highlighted, will lead the side.
Fazil who is rated as the best fly half in Asia is sure to bring glory as a leader and he will be backed by a good set of ruggerites.
