Isipathana College will go all out to beat Science College, Mount Lavinia and win the Milo President’s Trophy Knockout tournament when the two teams meet in the grand final at the Royal Complex this evening.
Pathana of course defeated Trinity College, Kandy in the semi final 37-28 and will certainly be the favourites to retain their knockout title although Science have been magnificent this season.
Isipathana led by big number eight Omalka Gunaratne have only lost two matches this season, and it cost them two titles. They dominated the league competition until the final match when a tactical master class from Sanath Martis’ Royal stunned them.
Science played the entire season without a lot of pressure. At the beginning of the season no one would have expected them to finish fourth in the league and to reach the knockout finals, but today could be a whole new experience for the Mount lads.
They have been able to beat some top teams this year which included an absolute hammering of 52-26 against Royal, but they should know Isipathana is the real deal.
Lasindu Ishan’s side certainly has the pace in the wings, and on their day Science backs could outclass mighty Isipathana with the pace. However, the experience and the power of the Havelock boys could make the difference in the end.
Science centre Thanuja Maduranga’s performance would have a huge impact on the outcome of the match as he is one of the players who have the potential to sneak through the Isipathana defence.
One should also not forget that the defending champions have got some good forwards including blokes like Chathura Dilshan who has had a good season.
It would also be interesting to see the tactical ploys adopted by the two veteran coaches Nilufer Ibrahim (Isipathana) and Collin Denis (Science).
Isipathana XV (Probables): Sachin Dulshan, Nisal Deshantha, Lahiru Vishwajith, Chathura Dilshan, Matheesha Sarathchandra, Wageesha Weerasinghe, Dilan Devinda, Omalka Gunaratne (captain), Harsha Maduranga and Isuru Koongahawatte, Asitha Punchihewa, Kushan Indunil, Sumudu Anuradha, Dilan Gallage, Rehan de Silva
Science XV (Probables): Chathura Janith, Dananjaya Fonseka, V.Kavinga, Daminda Lakshan, M.Ayeshmantha, U.Madushanka, Janith Laksara, Lasindu Ishan (Captain), Hashan Madumadawa and Nishad Niranjan, Sajith Roshan, Nirosh Udayanga, Thanjua Maduranga, Tharindu Maduranga, Supun Dilshan

Isipathana College, who failed to defend their league title, will be desperate to beat Trinity College, Kandy when the two teams meet in the Milo President’s Trophy Knockout semi final match at Royal Sports Complex this evening.
The lads from Havelock Town maintained an unbeaten record until their last league game, which they lost to Royal College, who eventually clinched the title. Pathana however, will still be the favourites to win the knockouts, especially with Royal expected to field a second string side during this particular tournament.
The team from the Hill Capital on the other hand will travel to Reid Avenue with a point to prove. They haven’t had an awful season, but they haven’t done much either this time around. Last year of course they were in the title race until the final week and did win the Bradby. The expectations are always high on a team like that and if they do end the season without a trophy that would certainly be a disappointment.
Omalka Gunaratne’s team would look to capitalize on their backs, who in comparison to Trinity are very experienced. Two wing three quarters Dilan Gallage and Asitha Punchihewa have performed well this season. Place kicking still appears to be their problem although fly half Isuru Koongahawatte had a few decent matches. Captain Gunaratne himself hasn’t been in very good form in recent weeks. He was marked very well by most teams and he’d want to score more tries than he has in the last five weeks.
Isipathana will play this match without their coach Nilfer Ibrahim who has been handed a one-match touchline ban by Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA).
Trinity are far from being a one-man team, but their full back Saranga Gunatilake’s contributions have been quite instrumental whenever they succeeded. He has scored nine tries so far.
Isipathana XV (Probables): Sachin Dulshan, Nisal Deshantha, Lahiru Vishwajith, Chathura Dilshan, Matheesha Sarathchandra, Wageesha Weerasinghe, Dilan Devinda, Omalka Gunaratne (captain), Harsha Maduranga and Isuru Koongahawatte, Asitha Punchihewa, Kushan Indunil, Sumudu Anuradha, Dilan Gallage, Rehan de Silva
Trinity XV (Probables): Ghazail Ismail, Nethmal Sakalasooriya, Nathan Yee, Rahul Karunatilake, Sajith Roshan, Rukshan Dhammapala, Anuka Boyogoda, Isuru Rangala (captain), A. Bandara and Thisila Perera, Sanishka Abeywickrama, Ryan Weerakoon, D. Hettige, Saranga Gunatilake

Isipathana College kept their unbeaten record intact by earning a hard-fought victory over Kingswood College Kandy by 32 points (2 goals, 3 tries, and 1 penalty) to 22 points (2 goals, 1 try, and 1 penalty) in their inter-school Division 1 U-20 League tournament rugby match which was worked off yesterday at Bogambara Grounds in Kandy.

Both schools started off proceedings with a good brand of rugby, and in the second minute of play Isipathana Captain and number eight Omalka Gunarathna scored a try for Isipathana and the conversion was fluffed by fly half Isuru Kongahawaththa to make the score 5 nil in favour of Isipathana.
However, within the space of eight minutes Kingswood opened scoring with a penalty put over by their Captain Reeza Rafaideen to make the score 5-3.
In the 21st minute of play, Isipathana winger Asitha Punchihewa scored a try which was goaled by their fly half Isuru Kongahawaththa to increase the score line to 12 –3.
Within the space of four minutes Kingswood closed the gap to just two points when their hard working flanker Srinath Wimalaweera went over the line for a well earned try and Captain Rafaideen made the conversion. Isipathana 12 – Kingswood 10.
Just before half-time, Isipathana scored again when off a line out they secured possession and worked their line beautifully to Dilshan to Omalka to winger Dillan Gallege, who scored a fantastic try brushing off several Kingswood defenders while covering a good distance. Fly half Kongahawaththa made the conversion to increase the lead to 17-10 at half time.

In the seventh minute of the second half Isipathana received a penalty and their captain Omalka took a short tap and went through the entire Kingswood defense to score a try, converted by fly half Kongahawaththa. Score Pathana 24 Kingswood 10.
Kingswood reduced the lead to just two points when they scored two back to back tries through their flanker Srinath Wimalaweera and number eight Senesh Weerasinghe. Captain Rafaideen converted one of the tries to close the gap to 24-22 in favour of Isipathana.
As the game got into an anticlimax, Isipathana got a penalty in the 26th minute of play, which was put over by Kongahawaththa to increase the Pathana lead to 27 – 22.
In the 37th minute, Isipathana sealed the match when off a scrum Omalka Gunarathna went on the blind side passing several Kingswood defenders and before he was brought down inches away from the try line but managed to give a fantastic off load to his hard working flanker Wageesha Weerasinghe who went over the line. The conversion was missed by Kongahawaththa and the green shirts remained unbeaten in the first round by beating Kingswood 32 points to 22.
