All-rounder Mitchell Marsh will return home from the Indian Premier League (IPL) with a side strain and will be assessed ahead of Australia’s tour of West Indies next month, Cricket Australia (CA) said on Sunday.

Marsh is the third big casualty at Rising Pune Supergiants, who have already lost former England batsman Kevin Pietersen (calf) and South African Faf du Plessis (finger) to injuries.

“Mitchell experienced some pain over his left abdominal area whilst batting at a training session with his team Pune in the IPL a few days ago,” CA sports science and sports medicine manager Alex Kountouris said in a statement.

“He missed his team’s next game and the pain has not resolved. He had scans in India that suggest he has a side strain injury and will now return home for further assessment and treatment ahead of the tour of the West Indies.”

Australia will compete in a June 5-21 tri-nation one-day series in West Indies, also involving South Africa.

“Once we have a better understanding of the extent of the injury we will be able to advise on his return to play timeframes,” Kountouris added

The Foundation of Goodness confirmed Tuesday that it is organising a Murali Harmony Cup Unity tour to the United Arab Emirates following an invitation from Kevin Pietersen’s KP24 Foundation.

The Unity Squad includes exceptionally talented under 18 cricketers from different schools island-wide, including five boys from previously war-affected areas in the North and East.

The young cricketers were invited to participate in the tour after their outstanding performances during the 2015 Murali Harmony Cup completed in October.

The Unity Squad, designed to showcase Sri Lanka’s cultural diversity while promoting nation-building and reconciliation, will depart for the UAE today on a 10-day tour.

The 12-member squad will be captained by wicket-keeper batsman Nipun Haggalla from Ananda College.

The initiative is spearheaded by England legend Kevin Pietersen who has set-up a cricket academy based in Dubai to develop cricket worldwide.

The flagship 24/7 project aims to unearth talent in some of the poorest communities from some of cricket’s greatest playing nations.

Seven teams each from different countries will take part in a fully funded trip to Dubai where the players will gain unique access to the KP Academy.

A 7-day intensive training camp will culminate with a T20 World Cup style tournament played over the final 3 days of the 10-day tour.

During this period a player will be identified from each country and be offered a very special Foundation Scholarship, fully supporting them in the next phase of their personal development back in their homeland.

This player will be flown back to Dubai the following year to assist with the delivery of the next intake of the 24/7 Project as a playing ambassador.

The Unity Squad:

Nipun Haggalla, Captain (Ananda College, WK/RHB), SK Kiritharan (Mannar & Vavuniya Combined Schools, RHB), Vishwa Dissanayake (Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala, LHB/LALS), Avishka Shehan (Trinco & Batti Combined Schools, RHB/RM), Dileepa Sandaruwan (Moneragala Combined Schools, RHB/OB), MMG Akalanka (Up Country Combined Schools, LHB/RF), Niroshan Benjamin (St John’s College Jaffna, RHB/RF) ,KK Kevin (Richmond College Galle, LHB/RLB), S Thasoban (Jaffna Combined Schools, RHB/OB), Bhanuka Pamuditha (P de S Kularatne College Ambalangoda, RHB/OB), Chanuka Asinsana (Debarawewa Central College,RHB/OB), Mugunthan Nithushan (Kilinochchi & Mullaitivu Combined Schools, LHB/OB)

Officials: Joel Fernando (Manager), Chaminda de Silva (Asst. Manager/Tour Co-ordinator), AS Nishanthan (Schools Representative).

Colin Graves, the incoming chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, was adamant Friday that he made no promises to Kevin Pietersen about a possible return to Test cricket.

Graves, whose tenure as ECB chairman started Friday, released a statement via the governing body’s website in his first public response to claims from Pietersen that he had received “incredibly deceitful” treatment.

Andrew Strauss, the new ECB director of cricket and Pietersen’s successor as England captain, said Tuesday that a “massive trust issue” prevented the South Africa-born batsman’s return, even though Pietersen is England’s all-time leading run-scorer across all formats.

That appeared to contradict earlier comments from Graves that a return was possible if Pietersen, in international exile since the team’s 5-0 Ashes thrashing in Australia last year, scored enough runs in county cricket.

But shortly after Pietersen made an unbeaten triple century for Surrey against Leicestershire on Monday, Strauss told him to forget about playing for England against New Zealand and Australia this home season.

That in turn led Pietersen to say he’d been “misled”, with the 34-year-old going on to make an unbeaten 355 against Leicestershire.

But former Yorkshire chairman Graves had a different take on events, saying Friday: “In the past few days my integrity has been called into question, something I can’t accept.

“Throughout my business career and my years at Yorkshire, integrity has been my watchword. It governs everything I do and is an important part of what I bring to the ECB.

– No guarantees –
“So it saddens me that what was a private conversation with Kevin in March has been used to do just that.

“I didn’t make any promises, There were no guarantees that if he chose to exit his IPL (Indian Premier League) contract, play county cricket and score runs he would be selected for England — and I said he should make any decision on his future on that basis.”

However, Graves appeared to be defending himself from a charge Pietersen had not made, as the batsman hadn’t said he’d been “promised” anything, but rather that if he did fulfil certain conditions he would at least be considered for England selection.

Graves was prepared to accept there may have been a “misunderstanding”.

“Back then, when we talked on the phone, Kevin asked if I thought his England career had ended in the

right manner following the last Ashes series in Australia,” Graves wrote in his ECB blog.

“I agreed that nobody particularly emerged with much credit from the whole episode, particularly given his achievements for England.

“I can see something has been misunderstood around the conversation and in the following debate – and perhaps how that happened.”

Strauss’s decision to ditch Pietersen was followed by a report in the Daily Mirror that England captain Alastair Cook had threatened to quit international cricket if he came back into the side.

Graves said he was happy to abide by Strauss’s judgement.

He added the scars from Pietersen’s incendiary autobiography, published in October last year and severely critical of many of his colleagues, were unlikely to heal quickly.

“What I did stress was that when I took over as chairman I would back those people whose job it was to take the decisions on team selection,” Graves said. “I stand by that.

“Given the history and the book, the simple fact is that bridges have still not been rebuilt and trust needs to be restored.”

Pietersen is currently sidelined due to a calf injury sustained playing against Leicestershire that ruled him out of joining the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the IPL and so would, quite likely, have been unavailable for next week’s first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s.

Kevin Pietersen says he is “angry and hurt” at being told he will not be considered for selection by England.

The batsman was given hope of a recall by incoming England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Colin Graves, but has been told by new director of cricket Andrew Strauss he is not required.Pietersen was told his international career was over in February 2014, only for Graves to suggest the 34-year-old could add to his 104 England caps if he joined a county and scored enough runs to merit a recall.

As a result, the right-hander pulled out of a deal with IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad and signed for Surrey.

He made 355 not out against Leicestershire but Strauss said he will not be selected this summer because “trust has eroded” between Pietersen and the ECB.

“I have done everything I can,” added Pietersen, who made his Test debut in 2005. “Was I lied to by the chairman? Only he can answer that. Tom Harrison and Andrew Strauss have said today that all three of them are united in this decision, so I don’t know what to think.

“What has happened since Colin told me if I scored county runs I would be available for selection?”
