Sri Lanka’s solitary medalist at the recently concluded Asian Athletics Championships, Nimali Liyanarachchi eased to victory at the first leg of the Asian Grand Prix (AGP) series which was held at in Pathum Thani, Thailand yesterday.

Among 13 Sri Lankan athletes who took part in the first of three AGP legs this year, Nimali was the only gold medalist. She clocked 2:07.18 secs in her pet event, the women’s 800 metres event while her former training partner Gayanthika Abeyratne, who clocked a disappointing 2:07.95 secs, was placed fourth.

Nimali was hoping to better the 23-year old Sri Lanka record for the women’s 800 metres, owned by Sriyani Dhammika Manike after missing the same by a whisker at Wuhan earlier this month. However, Nimali will have two more shots within the next few days, at the second and third legs of the AGP.

The Sri Lanka men’s 4X100m relay team, who broke the Sri Lanka record twice at the Asian Championship while finishing fourth, secured the silver medal at Bangkok last afternoon.

The Lankan team which included Himasha Eshan, Shehan Ambepitiya, Vinoj Suranjaya and Mohomed Ashroff, clocked 39.58 seconds to grab the second place behind Hong Kong team who won the gold with 39.41 seconds. Thailand finished third with 39.65 seconds.

Indunil Herath ran a much faster 800-metre final than he did at Wuhan and added a silver to his account. He clocked 1:49.52 seconds behind India’s Jinson Johnson who clocked 1:49.52 seconds and this kind of a run could have easily brought him a silver medal at the recently concluded Asian Championships.

Among the other Lankan athletes who tried their luck at the Asian Grand Prix yesterday, Manjula Kumara was placed fifth (2.19m) in the men’s high jump, Amila Jayasiri finished eighth (7.11m) in the men’s long jump, Waruna Lakshan Dayaratne was ranked sixth (71.09m) in the Men’s Javelin Throw and in the men’s 400 metres, Kalinga Kumarage (47.05 sec) and Anjana Gunaratne (47.32 sec) were placed fifth and seventh in the overall rankings.

The second leg of the AGP will be held in Chanthaburi on June 29. CW

Double Olympian Marathoner Anuradha Indrajith Cooray will leave to Kenya on 25th to start his training targeting the next IAAF World Championship which will be held in two months time in Beijing.
Cooray who lives in London and works in a bakery to take care of his family, made continuous requests to all relevant authorities asking for grants for his training in Kenya, which has fallen on deaf ears. Cooray has lost hope and said he will somehow find the finances as his mother country doesn’t take care of their athletes. Cooray is one of the two in the country who has already qualified for the next Olympic Games in Rio.
The other marathoner who will represent Sri Lanka in the Olympics as well as IAAF World Championship is Geethani Rajasekera, who has already begun her training in Haputale last month, as she too has had enough of begging from authorities, as it seems the heads of those authorities don’t have brains to understand their priorities.
Meanwhile, two athletes, shuttler Niluka Karunaratne and 400m runner Chandrika Rasnayake who have been receiving 1500 USD and 1000 USD each per month as the country’s Olympic Scholars faced heavy defeats in their most recent championships.
Karunaratne was beaten in his first match in the Yonex Sunrise International Challenge Badminton Tournament held in Colombo, while Rasnayake clocked a disappointing 54.24 seconds and finished fifth in the 400m of the Asian Championship, proving that both of them are not good enough to receive such a scholarship leaving out deserving ones like Cooray and Rajasekara.

Middle distance runner from Sooriyawewa, Nimali Liyanarachchi won the only medal for Sri Lanka as she clocked a new personal best to seal a bronze medal in the women’s 800m at the 21st Asian Athletics Championship concluded yesterday at Wuhan, China.

Nimali who was in the spotlight for a medal from the moment of selection to the team, delivered as expected with a 2:03.94 sec performance in heavy rainy conditions.
“I expected a medal more than anything, and was able to do that even though I missed the Sri Lanka record (2:03.85 sec) by a few points,” said Nimali, who seemed to be disappointed about the time rather than enjoying the podium finish after her race.
Nimali seemed to be targeting the medal rather than time in the race as she did not try to compete with Indian Tintu Lukka while keeping in close proximity to Chinese athlete Zhao Jing, and ran hard in the last 200m to secure the medal.
“I have three Grand Prix races coming up and expect to set new Sri Lanka records, as well as aim towards IAAF World Championship qualification” added Nimali.
Even though Sri Lanka won the expected 800m medal in the championship, it appeared none of the officials were prepared for the celebration, as Nimali didn’t receive a National Flag when she finished the race, or when she went for the medal ceremony.
Nimali Liyanarachchi wasn’t selected for the Asian Games last year despite being the country’s best 800m runner, and her coach said if she had been given an opportunity there, she may have secured a medal there too. Nimali and her coach Sujith Abeysekara trained some 250km away from the capital in Sooriyawewa, in a place which cannot be called a proper ground.
As mentioned before, Nimali, unlike many others, asked for a ground in Sooriyawewa from the authorities rather than personal benefits, as a ground for Sooriyawewa would have benefitted many athletes from that area, who had done and are doing remarkably well in Sri Lankan athletics.
Meanwhile, her former training partner also from Sooriyawewa, Gayanthika Abeyratne, finished in 6th place (2:07.46 sec).
Nadeeka Lakmali, another prime medal hope for the country, finished in a disappointing 4th position with a best throw of 52.29m. Lakmali was seeded for the bronze medal until the last moment, where Japanese Miyashita Risa threw a distance of 54.76m in her last attempt to seal the bronze. In the event worked off under rainy condition, none of athletes could throw near their seasonal or personal best, except for the winner, Chinese Liu Shiying, who set a new championship record of 61.33m. Almost all of them did not use their usual technique as they tried to throw as far as possible while running a few steps due to the wet and slippery condition of both the javelin and the track.
Vidusha Lakshani, the triple jumper, couldn’t produce a big performance under the rainy weather as she finished 7th with a best of 12.69m jump, which was won by Wang Wupin of China with a 13.76m jump.
Team leader Manjula Kumara Wijesekara was the unlucky athlete of the day as he finished sixth in the rain hampered high jump event, where the world record holder finished in third position. Manjula cleared 2:20m in his third attempt, and after one failure at 2:24m jump, skipped the next two attempts and tried the next height 2:28m. He did it assuming world leader and Asian record holder Qatar athlete Mutaz Barsham will definitely go past the 2:30m mark. But surprising many, including himself, Barsham failed to clear the 2:24m mark in his three attempts, and Manjula must have cursed himself for his previous decision. Nevertheless, he failed to clear 2:28m in his remaining two attempts and finished 6th. Barsham, who cleared 2:20m in first attempt, secured the bronze medal, and if Wijesekera cleared 2:24m without skipping, it was he who would have secured the bronze medal.
Indunil Herath disappointed in the 800m men’s finals as he finished in 5th position with 1:51.51 seconds. Indunil ran 1:50 seconds with ease in the heats and it was expected he would run well below that in the finals. But he couldn’t produce his usual best under heavy rain, and the event was won by Musaab Bala of Qatar in 1:49.40 sec .
The men’s 4X400m relay team finished in fifth position with a time of 3:05.79 seconds, which was won by Qatar beating favourite Saudi Arabia.
Sprinter Femi Ogunode of Qatar, who was in the spotlight to go below the 20 seconds mark in the 200m, couldn’t do so due to the rainy condition, even though he secured the sprinting double as well as 4X400m relay gold medal. Mohommad Saeed of UAE set a new championship record in the 10,000m women’s event in the day, where Indian athlete Babar Lalita who was in third position after 22 laps of the 25 laps race, couldn’t finish due to cramps.
Host china kept their superiority with clean sweeps in the women’s triple jump and shot putt, and won the most number of medals at the championship as expected.

Sri Lanka men’s 4X100m relay team set a new national record as they missed the medal by 0.03 seconds while schoolgirl sprinter Rumeshika Ratnayake clocked a personal best of 11.56 seconds in 100m on the second day of the 21st Asian Athletics Championship held yesterday here in Wuhan China.
Ratnayake stunned the spectators as she clocked the third fastest time by 100m female sprinter in Sri Lankan history (11.56 seconds), as she finished sixth in the women’s 100m finals.
“I wanted to answer to people who doubted my ability and did not select me for the tour at first and also for those who trusted me. My target was 11.6 seconds and I did below that,” said Rumeshika who had mixed feelings about missing a medal as well as clocking an amazing time.
In the men’s 4X100m relay, schoolboy Himasha Eashan took the start of the relay followed by Shehan Ambepitiya, Suranjaya de Silva and Mohommad Ashroff in the final lap where all did their best and ran best for the country as they clocked 39.38 seconds, a new Sri Lanka record for the second time in the day. Still they couldn’t finish in the podium.
They ended fourth behind China, Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei who finished just 0.03 seconds in front (39.35 seconds) for the third place.
By doing so, Sri Lanka beat teams like Thailand who are Asian giants in relay running, while also finishing ahead of India.
Earlier in the heat Sri Lanka clocked 39.59 seconds (a new record) and finished third to advance for the finals.
The Sri Lanka team erased the previous record of 39.71 seconds set by Prabashitha Caldera, Umanga Surendra, D. Dissanayake and Joy Danushka Perera in 2004 at the Asian Grand Prix.
Meanwhile, female hurdler Niluka Wickremasinghe clocked a disappointing 61.66 seconds and finished fourth in the heat, while failing to advance.
Chandrika Rasnayake clocked a disappointing 54.24 seconds to finish fifth in the 400m women finals. Chaminda Wijekoon clocked 14:23.77 sec and finished 9th in the 5000m men’s final.
Today will be a rest for competition which will resume tomorrow.

The sports election saga took another turn yesterday as the world governing body of International Athletics ‘IAAF’ sent an email to its local body stating that the IAAF does not recognize the present office-bearers.
According to the email sent from IAAF to Athletics Association of Sri Lanka (AASL), the world governing body had asked to conduct an election according to their constitution without political involvement, as they do not recognize the concluded election was an independent one.
Nevertheless the present president of AASL Sugath Thialakaratne said they are going to discuss the matter with the IAAF to resolve the issue.
“We should discuss and look what we can do with the present situation. We can’t put country’s athletics in danger with the World Championship and World Congress coming up in two months,” said Thilakaratne during the Asian Athletics championship in Wuhan.
According to the sources close to AASL, failing to do so will put country’s athletics in jeopardy.
The IAAF will ban the local body which will prevent Sri Lankan athletes taking part in international events including the forthcoming IAAF World Championship in two months time, IAAF World Youth, Asian Grand Prix, and Commonwealth Youth Games etc which will be held this year.
Three members of Sri Lankan athletics delegation at the Asian Championship including Sugath Thilakaratne had been summoned to an IAAF delegation and they had explained the situation to them.
The IAAF had said they don’t recognize the laws which had been implemented by the Sports Ministry which had interfered with the autonomy of the national body.
Prior to this, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), International Cricket Council (ICC), FINA and ARFU and many international bodies had warned Sri Lanka about the possible bans of their local bodies if they were not conducted according to their respective constitutions which had been approved by the world body.

Teenage sprinter Rumeshika Kumari Rathnayake took her golden run to Asian level as she clocked a personal best of 11.72 seconds in the semi-finals of the 100m and advanced to the finals at the 21st Asian Athletics championship which started at Wuhan, China yesterday. Rumeshika’s time is the fastest by a Sri Lankan female after Susanthika Jayasinghe’s retirement.
“It was my first senior international meet, as my target was 11.6 seconds and hope I could achieve that in the finals,” said a jubilant Rathnayake after the race.
She clocked 11.87 seconds in the heats and finished in third position to advance for the semi-finals before clocking the amazing personal best as she will compete in the finals today.
Meanwhile, in the men’s race Himasha Eashan was placed 4th in the semifinals with a time of 10.52 seconds and did not advance to the finals. Eashan clocked 10.73 seconds in the heats and finished fourth to advance for semis.
Chandrika Rasnayake kept Sri Lanka medal hopes alive as she finished first in the 400m women’s heat and advanced to the finals.
Rasnayake from Air Force clocked modest 54: 18 seconds and will compete in the sixth lane at finals. Indian Poovamma Raju is the favourite for the title as she clocked 52.94 seconds in the heats where Asian Games record holder Bahrain’s Oluwakemi Adekoya did not take part in the 400m.
Rasnayake will compete in her finals at 1:30 p.m. Sri Lanka time even though she doesn’t seems to be in her best form this time.
In other events Sri Lankan 1500m runners Chinthaka Somawardene finished in a disappointing 10th position with a time of 3: 52.68. While 400m runner Kalinga Kumarage ended his journey in the individual event as he clocked a disappointing 47.56 seconds and finished fourth in the heats.
