(AFP) Wayne Rooney has set his sights on stealing the spotlight from Manchester United new-boy Anthony Martial when England’s freshly-crowned record goal scorer returns to Premier League action in Saturday’s clash with bitter rivals Liverpool.

Rooney passed Bobby Charlton as England’s most prolific marksman when he netted his 50th international goal with a powerful penalty in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Switzerland at Wembley.
It was a much-needed jolt of confidence for Rooney, whose only goals in United colours this term have come in a Champions League rout of Club Brugge.

The 29-year-old hopes his memorable milestone provides the springboard for a dynamic display against Liverpool at Old Trafford, and ideally an end to his 10-match goalless run in the Premier League that stretches back to April.
“To achieve what I have, I would be lying if I said it didn’t put a spring in my step and make you want to carry on (scoring),” Rooney said.

“I am very happy and grateful. Now I have to get back into training and start focusing on Liverpool.
“Hopefully getting two goals in the last two games will mean I continue scoring.”
United manager Louis van Gaal could do with a sustained run of influential performances from Rooney as he looks to ease the weight of expectations on new signing Martial.
The 19-year-old was lured from Monaco on transfer deadline day for a £36 million ($55 million) fee that could rise to £58 million.
The vast sum is a major gamble on the raw French forward’s untapped potential and even van Gaal, who needed an additional threat to pep up a spluttering attack that has scored only three goals in four league games, has described the fee for Martial as “ridiculous”.

Both United, 2-1 losers at Swansea, and Liverpool, shocked 3-0 at home by West Ham, were beaten for the first time this season in their last matches before the international break, raising doubts about their ability to fight for the title.
Liverpool’s Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva, likely to start against United with Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen struggling with injuries, admits the outcome of Saturday’s match will have a significant impact on how both clubs fare this season.
“The two teams arrive in a similar situation with a lot of new players, a lot of new signings,” Lucas said.
“It’s probably one of the biggest games of the season. I think if you get a good result there it can give you a lot of belief and confidence going forward.
“It’s a good opportunity for us to put the result against West Ham behind us and start again.”

The lads from Kalutara will give their heart and soul in winning the title, having lost to Army in the 2014 finals.

Midfielder Victor Caceres played a long ball out of the Paraguay half for Edgar Benitez to chase and Kerr’s attempt at a clearing header bounced straight off the striker’s thigh and into the net in the 35th minute.

Paraguay moved top on four points from two matches, one more than title holders Uruguay and three in front of Argentina, who meet later in La Serena (0130 GMT).

Jamaica, in the tournament for the first time as a guest team and warming up for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States starting on July 7, have no points after they also lost their first game 1-0 to Uruguay.

It was Paraguay’s first win in 10 Copa America matches. They reached the 2011 final with five consecutive draws including two penalty shootout wins.

The match was also coach Ramon Diaz’s first victory in his fifth game in charge and followed their surprise 2-2 draw with favourites Argentina three days ago.

“We needed to win to be calm in our next matches … It was tough but it’s important to win and we’re happy with the three points,” captain Roque Santa Cruz told reporters.

Santa Cruz said Paraguay, emerging from a lean spell that included missing the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, were beginning to gel under Diaz but needed to improve in front of goal.

“We’re pleased with the way the team is functioning, there’s a lot of intensity, I hope we can add some finishing,” he said.

Prior to the goal, Paraguay striker Raul Bobadilla went just wide with a scissors kick in the 21st minute and Santa Cruz’s volley went straight to Kerr in the 32nd.

Caceres had the ball in the net early in the second half but was ruled offside and left back Miguel Samudio hit the bar on the hour after a fine run and shot.

Jamaica’s best chance was a stinging low shot from outside the box by Garath McCleary that skimmed the outside of Anthony Silva’s right hand post with a quarter of an hour to go.

(AFP) Yet another Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick propelled Portugal to a crucial 3-2 win in Armenia in Euro 2016 qualifying on Saturday while Poland’s Robert Lewandowski hit one of the quickest triples in the competition’s history.

Andre Schuerrle also bagged a hat-trick in Germany’s 7-0 thrashing of Gibraltar but former European champions Greece’s embarrassing campaign continued as they were beaten 2-1 in the Faroe Islands.
Real Madrid superstar Ronaldo scored his third hat-trick in his last three games for club and country as Portugal held on with 10 men for the final half-hour in Yerevan to claim a crucial win in Group I.
Brazilian-born Marcos Pizzelli gave Armenia the lead but Ronaldo equalized from the penalty spot before adding two more in the space of four second-half minutes.
Fernando Santos’ side then had Tiago Mendes, the Atletico Madrid midfielder, sent off and were left to hang on after Hrayr Mkoyan pulled a goal back for the hosts.
Portugal have now won four games in a row since starting their campaign with a 1-0 home defeat to Albania and they top Group I by two points from Denmark, who beat Serbia 2-0 in Copenhagen thanks to a goal in each half from Yussuf Poulsen and Jakob Poulsen.
Poland remain top of Group D ahead of World Cup holders Germany after Lewandowski’s late hat-trick sealed a 4-0 win against Georgia in Warsaw.
Arkadiusz Milik put the Poles in front before captain Lewandowski doubled their lead in the 89th minute.
The Bayern Munich striker added another in the 92nd minute and completed a remarkable treble in the third minute of stoppage time to secure a handsome win.
It is the second-fastest hat-trick in the history of European Championship qualifying, bettered only by Arif Erdem, who scored three in three minutes for Turkey against Northern Ireland in the qualifying campaign for Euro 2000.
Poland are a point clear of Germany, who won 7-0 against minnows Gibraltar in Faro, Southern Portugal, despite Bastian Schweinsteiger having an early penalty saved. Schuerrle set them on their way and six more goals followed in the second half, including two more from the Wolfsburg forward, a brace from Max Kruse and one each for Ilkay Gundogan and Karim Bellarabi.
Scotland remain third, two points better off than the Republic of Ireland, after coming from behind to draw 1-1 in Dublin, Shaun Maloney’s shot deflecting in off home skipper John O’Shea to cancel out Jon Walters’ opener for Ireland.
The prospect of seeing all four British sides qualify together for a major tournament for the first time since the 1958 World Cup remains a very real one, with Northern Ireland still second in Group F after a 0-0 draw at home to leaders Romania at Windsor Park.
Michael O’Neill’s side are a point behind the Romanians and two better off than third-placed Hungary, who boosted their own chances by winning 1-0 in Finland thanks to a late goal by Zoltan Stieber of Hamburg.
However, Greece’s disastrous campaign continued as they were beaten 2-1 by traditional minnows the Faroe Islands in Torshavn.
A goal in each half from Hallur Hansson and Brandur Olsen secured a famous win for the hosts, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos of Borussia Dortmund getting one back in vain for Greece.
It is the second time the Euro 2004 winners have lost to the Faroes in this campaign — coach Claudio Ranieri was sacked after a 1-0 loss at home in November.
There has been no improvement yet under his Uruguayan successor Sergio Markarian, and Greece are rock bottom of the group with just two points from six games.

AFP) Luis Suarez and Neymar scored second-half goals to give Barcelona a 3-1 Champions League final victory over Juventus on Saturday as the Spaniards became the first team to twice win the European treble.

Luis Enrique capped his first season as Barcelona’s head coach by matching Pep Guardiola’s feat from the 2008/09 season when the Catalans captured the European, Spanish league and cup titles.
An early goal by Barca’s Ivan Rakitic was cancelled out by Juventus’ ex-Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, who equalized on 55 minutes. But Suarez put the game beyond the Italian champions with a 68th minute strike off a rebound at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. Neymar added the third with the last kick of the game in the 97th minute.
Juventus suffered the indignation of becoming the first team to lose six European Cup finals, 30 years after winning the trophy for the first time amidst the tragedy of the Heysel Stadium disaster. This was the fifth time Barcelona have been crowned European champions and it is their fourth Champions League title in the last decade after their 2006, 2009 and 2011 triumphs.
On the streets of Barcelona, where you could have heard a pin drop during the final, thousands of ecstatic fans dressed in their team colours of blue and red celebrated with cheers, chants and fire crackers.
“It’s a dream, I still can’t believe it!” said Eduard Ocana, a 23-year-old student, in the Catalan Capital, as cries of “champions, champions!” echoed around the famous party street of Las Ramblas.
For Suarez it was a triumphant end to a first season with the Spanish Champions after his ignominious biting ban at the World Cup.
“It’s incredible, it’s something unique. To win these trophies you have to suffer,” he said.
“The best thing about this side is the spirit and the fact we’ve been united since the start of the season.”
In 2009 Barcelona joined the elite club of treble winners that include Celtic, Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich. Now, they are the first to have done that twice.
Despite brief moments of magic, Lionel Messi failed to become the first player to score in three Champions League finals as he equalled Dutch star Clarence Seedorf’s tally of four winners’ medals.
Barcelona showed early nerves with two uncustomary mistakes in defence straight from kick-off before Rakitic gave the Catalan giants the lead with just four minutes gone.
Neymar fed his captain Andres Iniesta from the left wing and the Spain international squared for Rakitic to drill home from close range, past Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon.

Juve came back into the game midway through the first half, but Suarez forced Buffon, who failed to claim a winners’ medal at the 12th attempt, into another save as it finished 1-0 at the break.
The Spaniards picked up where they left off in the second half when Rakitic fed Suarez, who forced Buffon into a diving save with 48 minutes gone before firing over moments later.

Messi, who showed glimpses of his brilliance with a first-half darting run through the Juve defence, then fired wide after exchanging two quick passes in the build-up move.
