Sri Lanka had to be content with fourth place in the Asian Rugby Sevens 2016 Rio Olympic Qualifiers when they were edged out 21-26 by South Korea at the Hong Kong International Stadium yesterday.

Sri Lanka gave off a superb fight back, with their dazzling runs and fierce tackling to score three tries all of which were converted, but could not match their much heavier opponents especially in the set pieces and the breakdowns and conceded three goals and a try. Korea thus clinched the important third place.

In the pool stages Tuskers beat Iran and Malaysia convincingly by 31-10 and 24-10 respectively but later in the day went down fighting to the host nation Hong Kong by 27 points to 12 , after holding on to a commanding 12-5 lead early in the second half.

In the final pool match played yesterday the Sri Lankan team shocked the entire crowd present at the grounds by defeating the formidable Philippine team 50-5. Sri Lanka gave a fabulous Fijian brand of rugby to thrash their opponents and enter the Cup championship semi-finals.

In the semis Sri Lanka did not have any clue to Asian giants Japan who thrashed them 43-nil.

For Sri Lanka ex-skipper Fazil Marija, Danushka Ranjan, Shenal Dias, Anurudda Wilwara, Gayan Weeraratne, Jason Dissanayka and Kanchana Ramanayaka played their hearts out in the tournament.

Japan kept their reputation as the number one team in Asia by coming from being 0-10 down beat Hong Kong 24-10 to bag the Cup Championship enabling them to go to the Rio Olympics in 2016. Meanwhile the Chinese men won the Plate Championship thrashing Malaysia 38-5.

Sri Lankan women’s rugby team gave an improved performance by securing sixth slot when they lost to Guam 21-5 in the fifth place playoff at Hong Kong Stadium. Incidentally in the pool stages Sri Lankan women thrashed Guam 22-7.

Ma’a Nonu replaces Sony Bill Williams in the midfield and Nehe Milner-Skudder wins the contested wing berth in a powerful All Blacks side to face France in their World Cup quarter final on Saturday.

Captain Richie McCaw returns, having recovered from the leg injury that kept him out of the All Blacks final pool game against Tonga.

He is one of four world players of the year, along with Kieran Read, Dan Carter and Brodie Retallick in a side which boasts an impressive 1,295 Test caps in total. “The big boys have to step up to the plate and the team that does this the best will move through to the next round. It’s as simple as that,” coach Steve Hansen said when naming the side on Thursday.

The selection of Nonu ahead of Williams was always going to be a close call as was choosing between Milner-Skudder and Waisake Naholo.

Wyatt Crockett will start at loosehead prop after Tony Woodcock’s campaign was ended by a serious hamstring strain in the All Blacks last pool match against Tonga. Joe Moody, rushed over from New Zealand to replace Woodcock, goes straight onto the bench as a specialist loosehead..

A superb second half rally saw Science College, Mount Lavinia create history by beating Isipathana College by 21 points (3 Goals) to 18 (1 Goal, 1 Try , 2 Penalties) and clinch the Milo Rugby Knock Out Trophy in the final played at the Royal Complex yesterday. Winners were trailing by 7-15 at lemons.

It was a historic moment for the lads from Mount Lavinia as this is the first time they have won a major trophy in XV side rugby.

Isipathana were out to a flying start in the first half when in the second minute of play, full back Rehan Silva received a pass from winger Asitha Punchihewa and fell over the line for an unconverted try by the left corner flag. Score 5 Nil in favour of Isipathana.

Two minutes later, Isipathana increased their lead to 8 Nil, when their fly half Isuru Kongahawatta fired across a 30 metre penalty.

Five minutes later Science College hit back when off a three quarter move, centre Tharindu Maduranga made a lovely break to score a try mid right. He added the extra points himself to close the gap to 8-7 in favour of Isipathana.

On the stroke of half time, Isipathana increased their lead when their second row forward Chathura Dilshan powered his way to touch down under the post to give their fly half Isuru Kongahawatte an easy kick at goal. And the lads from Havelock town led 15- 7 at the breather. Early in the second half, in the 12th minute of play, Pathana went ahead further when their fly half Isuru kongahawatte put over a 30 metre penalty to make it 18-7.

Science College’s fight-back began in the 22nd minute of the second half when their scrum half Hashan Madumadawa scampered through for a try under the post. Tharindu Maduranga added the extra points to make the score 18 points to 14 in favour of Isipathana. Three minutes later, Science full back Supun Dilshan scored the most extravagant try of the match, when he collected a desperate clearance kick from Isipathana fly half Isuru Kongahawatte and burst through over 30 metres to fall over mid right for a glorious try. Centre Tharindu Maduranga converted to give them a 21-18 lead.

Although Isipathana tried hard in the last ten minutes, they could not pierce the rock hard Science defence and the lads from Mount Lavinia ran out worthy winners by 21 points to 18. Referee Irshad carder controlled the game.

Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) is in a desperate attempt to implement new rules for school’s coaches from the next rugby season (2016).
From next year Schools’ coaches should be qualified IRB level one coaches going through the course if they want to coach a school’s side. “We’ll introduce this from 2016 and the SLSRFA will have to stick by this rule” said secretary Susantha Mendis.
“We have to have good coaches, otherwise players get injured and also the taking of banned substance by players happens due to the lack of the knowledge of coaches said Mendis.
SLSRFA is also willing to ask for the issuance of a licence to school rugby coaches from the Sports Ministry.
He further said even foreign coaches must have that license, because we don’t know whether they are qualified or not “We’ll do this as well with the support from the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union. (AG)

Royal College’s title charge will be tested when they face St. Joseph’s College in their Singer Inter-school Under-20 Division 1 League Rugby Tournament match at Reid Avenue today.
Royal of course are unbeaten thus far in the tournament and are one of the hot contenders for the league title, but they should make sure they go on to the final week of the competition unbeaten to stand any chance of regaining the biggest championship in Sri Lanka’s school rugby.
Like Isipathana College, Royalists do have a very strong pack which is one of the reasons why they score so many tries off the rolling maul, but having said that, their back division players have been able to produce some cracking tries over the course of the last few months. One bloke who just cannot stop scoring tries is wing three quarter Mahima Gamage. He has been in top form since the first leg of Bradby at Pallekele.
Captain and centre Bhanuka Gamage may not have captured the headlines as some of his teammates, but has been a workhorse for his side. However the real star of the season so far is their number eight Supun Warnakulasooriya, who has scored 13 tries – more than any other.
At times he plays as the hooker, but mostly as the number eight. However, the most important part being he finds a way to cross the white wash. Last season he scored 17 tries – the most for a hooker – and this time around he’s looking pretty good to better his own record.
On the other hand big things were expected of St. Joseph’s ever since they beat arch rivals St. Peter’s College at the very beginning of the season. They did play very well against the defending champions Isipathana, though they were edged out 20-18. Their defeat to Science College seems to have damaged their confidence, and they struggled a bit against S. Thomas’ despite beating them 27-25. Big prop forward Stephan Gregory has been leading the way for the Darley Road lads with nine tries.
Flanker Shehan Bopearachchi’s form in the first few matches was one of the reasons why Joes had a fantastic run. He, along with the number eight and captain Taariq Salih, will have to play a huge role if they are to pull off an upset against the much stronger Royal outfit.
Many have already tipped the Royal-Isipathana clash to decide this year’s winner, but prior to that it will be very important for both the sides that they see off St. Joseph’s and Trinity College respectively this week.
Meanwhile St Peter’s College will host S. Thomas’ College at Bambalapitiya, while Kingswood College, Kandy will travel to Mount Lavinia to take on Science College.
Wesley College will face Dharmaraja College, Kandy in a Plate Championship match at Longden Place.
Royal XV: Ayesh Maduranga, Harith Lokugamage, Nikhila Gunadheera, Chandula Jayasundara, Umesha Madushan, Shawkat Lahir, Keshan Peiris, Supun Warnakulasooriya, Ashok Wijekumar and Gayal Jayasinghe, Mahima Gamage, Gawesh Yapa, Bhanuka Gamage, Andrew de Silva, Ovin Askey
Joseph’s XV: Charana Chamikara, Devon Fernando, Stephan Gregory, Ishane Peters, Raveen de Silva, Viraj Perera, Shehan Bopearachchi, Taariq Salih, Vimukthi Rahul and Raveen Antonio, Vinul Fernando, Romesh Priyankara, Suneth Chathuranga, Gemunu Chethiya, Shamilka Kurumbalapitiya

Royal College will face stiff opposition from St. Peter’s College when they lock horns in their inter-school ‘Singer League’ rugby match today at St. Peter’s College Ground, Bambalapitiya. Kick off at 4:30 p.m.
Royal go into this match unbeaten so far with victories under their belt against St. Anthony’s Kandy, Science Mt. Lavinia, Dharmaraja Kandy, S. Thomas’ Mt. Lavinia, Trinity College and Kingswood College Kandy.
From the Royal camp the man to watch is undoubtedly their unsung hero and number eight Supun Warnakulasooriya. Supun has dished out brilliant rugby this season scoring huge number of tries through that fantastic rolling maul. Captain and centre Bhanuka Gamage, Umesh Madushan, Shauket Lahir, Shabith Feroze and that speedster Mahima Gamage all have had a fantastic season. Their entire forwards and the three quarters also combined effectively in enabling them to make this huge impact on their opponents. The man who has done these wonders for Royal College rugby is none other than the mastermind and one of the best, if not the best in the business today, their head coach Sanath Martis.
Peterites on the other hand have had a mixed season, where they have lost to St. Joseph’s 17-10 and lost to Isipathana 20-18. They then began getting on the right track slowly, going on to turn tables on Trinity last week in a sensational come from behind win, being 10 points to 20 down at half time – then winning 30-25.
The players to watch from the Peterite camp are their forwards V. Anjana, Rahal Delpachithra, Maleesha Rajapaksha, Ranith Silva, Shane Gurusinghe and Mark de Silva. Playing from the three-quarter line captain Kevin ‘Kutty’ Dixon is having the season of his life along with Diyath Fernando, Avishka Ranasinghe, Nishon Perera, Harshana Peiris, Avishka Heenpella and Sandesh Jayawickrama. Going by the St. Peter’s performance in the latter stages of the season, it seems like their coach Ben MacDougall has now got the right combination with the assistance of his assistant coaches Angelo Wickramaratne and Shantha Dharmarathne.

Stadium pitches, hotel beds and weather patterns have been occupying the mind of South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer as he leaves nothing to chance in the hope of leading the Springboks to World Cup glory this year.
Meyer believes off-field preparations for the tournament in England are as important as what he does with the players on the training field.
His management team have gone over every previous World Cup in detail to see how the winning side set up their campaign on and off the pitch and what the fine margins that led to success were.
“We have looked at every trend that has won a World Cup so we know exactly what it is going to take,” Meyer told reporters on Monday.
“We have studied every single weather pattern for the last 20 years so we will know what to face.
“We’ve been at the hotels, at the fields. I have guys investigating the fields now again, (breakdown skills coach) Richie Gray is there looking at conditions at the exact times that we are going to play.” Meyer has personally visited all the Boks’ venues during the day and in the evening and was surprised by the conditions.
“I thought it was going to be slow, sluggish surfaces but most of the surfaces are soccer stadiums so it is short grass, very hard,” he said.
“I think it’s going to be a much quicker game than we thought and we want to try and replicate everything we have seen.”
The South Africa squad is in camp this week and they practised at Cape Town’s World Cup soccer venue, rather than one of the city’s top school facilities as they usually do.
Meyer has personally tested the facilities his players will experience in England, including the beds they will sleep in.
“We have been to the training venue to see exactly where the media will be, how do we close it up. I have been to every single hotel, I have almost slept in every single bed.”
The World Cup takes place from 18 September to 31 October. The Boks are in Pool B along with Japan, Samoa, Scotland and the United States. (Reuters)
