Cricketing legend Mahela Jayawardene is to be contracted as an overseas player in the Georgie Pie Super Smash Twenty20 competition for Central Districts Cricket team, Central Stags in New Zealand. This agreement was made possible by key sponsor Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) and facilitated by Pro X New Zealand Ltd. Mahela’s first game for Central Districts will take place on 19 November 2015 at Nelson’s Saxton Oval ground and will be followed by several more games during November and December across the bottom half of New Zealand’s North Island. As part of the arrangement Mahela will act as brand ambassador for NMIT and undertake a range of promotional activities on behalf of the educational institution including social media and attendance at events in Sri Lanka and New Zealand over the coming 12 months. Of the agreement, NMIT Chief Executive Officer Tony Gray said, “NMIT is delighted to announce this exciting partnership with one of crickets all-time greats, Mahela Jayawardene. Our relationship with Mahela began with his first visit to NMIT a year ago and since then we have provided aquaculture expertise for his Ministry of Crab restaurant business, supported his Foundation of Goodness charity in Seenigama and more recently been the major sponsor in Mahela’s overseas player spot at Central Districts Cricket.” “What immediately impressed me about Mahela is his integrity and very obvious passion for his country,” says NMIT Chief Executive Tony Gray. “We are seeing a growing number of Sri Lankan students at NMIT who are enjoying their learner experience with us, working with local businesses and seeing their studies with us as providing opportunities for their career development both in Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Mahela is a very much a role model in Sri Lanka and we believe his support of NMIT adds another endorsement to the excellent experiences Sri Lankan students can have with us.” “I am thrilled to be playing for the Stags in this year’s Super Smash. I have enjoyed playing in New Zealand throughout my career and playing for one of the leading domestic teams will be a new and exciting challenge.” Said Mahela. Mahela also said that it is a pleasure to work with a reputable institution like NMIT.

Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has been approached for the proposed Legends’ T20 matches, promoted by legends Sachin Tendulkar and Shane Warne to make inroads into the untapped US market.

A source close to the Lanka’s legendary batsman confirmed the development.
“Yes, Mahela has been approached to play in the league promoted by Tendulkar and Warne. At this point I can only confirm about the offer being made but a few details still needs to be worked out,” a reliable source close to the cricketer told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
However the chances of Jayawardene signing for the proposed Legends ‘ T20 matches seems to be more than 90 percent at the moment.
“At this point of time, Mahela after his retirement from all forms of international cricket, is only freelancing in the private T20 leagues across the globe. His next assignment is Caribbean Premier League. After that, he is relatively free and there is no reason why Mahela won’t be signing on dotted lines,” an official tracking the development said.
It has been learnt that around 28 retired cricketers will be approached for the matches which will be mainly held in the US cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles with the first set of matches being tentatively planned during end August or early September this year.

These three cities have been initially earmarked as it will give the South Asian Diaspora in the United States, a chance to see the living legends of international cricket, live in action. While these matches are strictly exhibition matches with no official status whatsoever, the organizers may still have to approach the ICC for its approval.
“At this point the ICC has received no communication on the proposed T20 league. There is a process in place with regard to events such as this and the ICC will deal with it once it is approached,” an ICC spokesman said.
While Brett Lee, Matthew Hayden, Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting in all likelihood are going to be a part of this venture alongside Warne, South Africans Jacques Kallis, Allan Donald, Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, West Indians Brian Lara may also be seen entertaining their fans once again.
While there is no confirmation from any of the big former India cricketers, it has been learnt that the likes of Anil Kumble, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman will only sign on the dotted line after getting permission from the BCCI.
