Mahela Jayawardene could be joining the England coaching staff in a consultancy role. ESPNcricinfo understands that Paul Farbrace, who coached the Sri Lanka team to the World T20 title in 2014, has already spoken to the prolific former batsman but that Andrew Strauss, England’s team director, has yet to agree any deal. Trevor Bayliss, the new coach, also knows Jayawardene well from his period as Sri Lanka coach.
Jayawardene earned an outstanding record as a batsman across the formats and around the world in an 18-year international career. But it is his expertise in Asian conditions, in particular, that interests England now. Over the next 18 months or so, England will play Pakistan in the UAE, tour India and Bangladesh, as well as host Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The 2016 World T20 is also in India.
Confirming that Jayawardene had been contacted, an ECB spokesman suggested that he was not being viewed as a potential replacement for Mark Ramprakash, who is out of contract at the end of the season. Instead he would be used as a consultant, similar to the way Mushtaq Ahmed was used as a spin bowling consultant.
The England management are also understood to be thinking of using Paul Collingwood in a consultancy role with a specific view to limited-overs cricket. Collingwood, who is still playing for Durham, was captain of the England side that won the World T20 in 2010 and was utilized in a consultancy role when Ashley Giles was the limited-overs coach. Collingwood has also fulfilled a similar role with Scotland.
News of Jayawardene’s potential involvement with England may cause dismay in Sri Lanka. A team in transition would also no doubt benefit from his wisdom, but unless they are able to offer a longer-term deal, it may well be England that benefit from his knowledge.

Following a highly successful tour to Philippines, the Asian Division-1 Rugby winners, Sri Lanka have jumped up nine places to seal the 38th spot in the world rankings. With their latest victory the Tuskers are ranked fourth in Asia for the first time in history. All the members of Sri Lanka team was given a plaque and Rs 75 000 by the Ministry of Sports at a felicitation ceremony held at the Ministry of Sports in Colombo yesterday.
Sri Lanka fly half and Captain Fazil Marija believes that the motivation programme hosted by former Sri Lankan cricket Captain Mahela Jayawardene prior to the Asian rugby tournament helped his team to flourish at the international level.
“I must thank Mahela Jayawardene for the motivation programme he did before the tournament,” Marija said at the press conference.
“I think that was very useful for us. He (Mahela) spoke about how he prepared for the international level and shared his experiences on how to do well at that level which was a great learning curve for all of us,” the 29-year-old further told the journalists.
Arguably the finest out-side half Sri Lanka has ever produced, Marija also hailed his teammates for putting their body on the line in order to make the country proud.
“The team we had was quite good and everyone worked really hard. We had a good tough three weeks of practice and it was really valuable for all of us. Each and every member played their role in helping the country win this championship,” the former Kingswood captain said.
Minster of Sports, Navin Dissanayake in his speech congratulated the winning team and appreciated the main Sponsor Dialog Axiata PLC for their support over the years while mistakenly calling the captain Marija as ‘Thajudeen’ which was nothing more than a slip of the tongue.
“These boys have brought us great honour winning this Asian Championship. All credit for the boys for their heroic performance and making the country proud. I should also mention about the sponsors; Dialog once again has been fantastic being the main sponsor not only for rugby, but also for sports like cricket in this country, so a big thank you for Hans (Wijayasuriya) and his team,” he said.
Meanwhile, the President of Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU), Asanga Seneviratne confirmed that the country will not take part in the ‘Play-off’ for a spot in the Top Division.
“We are not going to play the ‘play-off’ against Hong Kong. We have played them so many times, but at this moment what is more important is not beating them, but giving these boys more exposure. We are planning to go on our first ever European tour where we are expected to play Portugal and Switzerland. We have also been invited to train with Hong Kong and play four matches there,” he revealed of Sri Lanka’s future tours.

Head coach Mickey Arthur believes the acquisition of Sri Lankan star Mahela Jayawardene will be pivotal to Jamaica Tallawah’s chances in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), which bowls off next month.

Jayawardene’s presence, according to the South African, is part of an overall strengthening of the squad as the Kingston-based franchise look to recapture the title they won in 2013, reports CMC.

“I am really excited to get an international player of that quality joining the team, and being able to bat through those middle overs for us is huge. We were very excited when we signed Mahela. We signed him for that role and we are really happy that we have him on board because we think he will do a really good job for us,” Arthur said.

“It is important that we keep improving. Our chances are right up there. We will do well. If we play to the best of our abilities there is just no doubt about us winning the tournament. I am just really excited and looking forward to it.”

Jayawardene, who recently quit international cricket following an illustrious career in all formats, will be joined by the likes of overseas players Chris Lynn, New Zealander Daniel Vettori and South African Rusty Theron.

Big-hitting opener Chris Gayle was one of four players retained along with Andre Russell, Jerome Taylor, Chadwick Walton. Jermaine Blackwood, who recently struck his maiden Test hundred for West Indies against England, will also further bolster the squad.

Arthur said he was pleased with the Tallawahs composition and was looking forward to getting preparation started when the camp opens on 12 June.

“We feel that we have strengthened the squad in every area that we felt we needed to. We are very happy with the squad that we have at our disposal. We have got our fingers on the pulse and making sure that these guys are all ready and prepared, so that when we get into camp they will be fit and ready to go,” he said.

Tallawahs open their campaign against Barbados Tridents at Kensington Oval on 23 June, three days after the tournament opens in Bridgetown.
