South Africa and New Zealand go into a one-match shootout for series honours when they meet in the second and final Test starting at SuperSport Park in Centurion Saturday.

The Proteas can nudge up one place to sixth in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings if they win, while the Black Caps will remain fifth irrespective of the result.

But the reputation of Test cricket is at much at stake as rankings points after a farcical first Test in Durban where less than 100 overs of cricket were played before a wet, soft outfield prevented any play on the last three days. There was even less cricket in a Test match between the West Indies and India in Port of Spain, also because of outfield conditions.

It is the first time Test cricket has been played in South Africa in August, almost two months before the usual start of the season.

Preparing grounds for winter conditions has been a challenge – which Durban failed to meet after re-seeding the outfield only two months before the match. Following reports from the match referees, the outfields in Durban and Port of Spain were condemned as “poor” by the ICC.

Centurion groundsman Rudolph du Preez had the advantage of planting winter grass much earlier than Durban, with work starting in April, almost immediately after the 2015-16 season.

He said it was necessary to plant winter grass because fielders struggled on dry, dormant summer grass when the same two countries met in a one-day international in August last year.

With virtually no rain falling on the South African Highveld during winter – and no rain predicted during the Test – Du Preez is confident that conditions will be suitable for Test cricket. He said more time had been necessary to prepare the pitch because cool conditions meant it took longer to dry out after watering.

Du Preez said he did not expect uneven bounce to be as much of a factor as it has been in the later stages of matches in recent seasons.

“It might not deteriorate as we are used to. It might be a little bit slower, it might be holding back a bit more,” he said. Centurion has been a fortress for South Africa in Test cricket, with the home side having won 16 of the 21 Tests at the ground. Their only two losses were against England in a contrived result in 1999-2000, engineered by the late Hansie Cronje before he was banned from cricket because of his association with bookmakers, and against Australia in 2013-14.

South Africa: Faf du Plessis (capt), Dean Elgar, Stephen Cook, Hashim Amla, JP Duminy, Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock (wkt), Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada, Dale Steyn, Dane Piedt

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (capt), Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, BJ Watling (wkt), Mitchell Santner, Doug Bracewell, Neil Wagner, Tim Southee, Trent Boult

Perth, Monday: Bat continued to dominate ball as Australia built a second-innings lead over New Zealand on day four of the second Test at the WACA Ground in Perth on Monday.

After Ross Taylor hit a career-best 290, the highest score ever by a visiting batsman in Australia, to steer New Zealand to a first innings lead, Steve Smith and Adam Voges posted twin centuries to help the home side recover after a shaky start.

At the close, Australia were 258 for two in their second innings, with Smith on 131 and Voges on 101, for an overall lead of 193.

It was Smith’s 12th century and fifth this year, but his first in a second innings, while for 36-year-old Voges it was just his second hundred and came in his first Test on his home ground.

Voges reached his century from the penultimate over of the day.

Smith was dropped on 96 when wicketkeeper BJ Watling put down a tough chance down leg-side off paceman Matt Henry.

Although the match appeared set to be a draw on a lifeless wicket which has offered little assistance to the bowlers over the first four days, Australia will hope to declare on the final day and dismiss the Kiwis cheaply.

Voges wasn’t giving much away about the final day’s plan, noting the flat nature of the wicket.

“I don’t think we will do them any favours,” he said.

“Ultimately that will be Steve’s decision but the good thing is we have some options.”

Taylor said he expected Australians to set the Kiwis a target.

“The odd ball’s doing a little bit to put the batter a little bit on edge,” he said.

“But knowing Australia, I’m sure they’ll come out tomorrow and try to score some quick runs and put us under pressure.

“I’m sure whatever they give us, we’ll definitely have a go, and we’ll wait and see what happens. ”

Australia already lead the three-Test series 1-0 after beating New Zealand by 208 runs at the Gabba.

In reply to Australia’s imposing 559 for nine declared after winning the toss, the Kiwis were dismissed for 624 just before lunch, their highest total against their trans-Tasman rivals on the back of Taylor’s mammoth knock and 166 from Kane Williamson.

That made it a record combined first innings total for a Test at the WACA Ground.

Kiwi hopes were then raised when Australian openers Joe Burns (0) and David Warner (24) fell early, leaving the home side precariously placed at 46 for two, with the injured Usman Khawaja (hamstring) not taking his place at number three.

The Kiwis were still 19 runs ahead at that stage, but Smith and Voges then added 212 runs for the third wicket.

Taylor was the last man to fall in the New Zealand innings as he attempted to join captain Brendon McCullum (302 v India) as only the second Kiwi to reach a triple century in Test cricket.

However, on 290 the right-hander holed out to substitute fielder Jonathan Wells off spinner Nathan Lyon to end a 37-run 10th-wicket stand with Trent Boult (23 not out).

Former skipper Taylor passed several milestones in his innings, which was his first century since November last year, and ended a form slump that even he admitted was starting to worry him.

He broke through 5,000 Test runs and posted the highest-ever score by a visiting player in a Test in Australia, as well as becoming the first Kiwi to pass 200 against Australia.

His innings, beating the 287 of England’s Reg ‘Tip’ Foster at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1903, was the third-highest ever for New Zealand at Test level.

Taylor, who put on 265 for the third wicket with Williamson, faced 374 balls and hit 43 boundaries in 567 minutes at the crease. Number 10 Southee gave the Kiwis a lead which seemed impossible on the opening day when he turned Mitchell Starc off his pads for four as they became the first visiting side to reach 600 in Australia since 2011. Starc was the best of the Australian bowlers and finished with four for 119.

PERTH, SUNDAY: Australian paceman Mitchell Starc joined an exclusive club with a sizzling delivery on the third day of the second Test against New Zealand at the WACA Ground in Perth on Sunday.

The fourth ball of his 21st over was clocked at 160.4 kilometres per hour (99.7 mph). Only four other fast bowlers have officially been recorded to have bowled at more than 160 kilometres per hour.

Pakistan’s Shoaib Akhtar holds the record with a 161.3 kilometres per hour thunderbolt against England at Newlands in 2003.

Australian pair Shaun Tait and Brett Lee were both recorded at 161.1 kilometres per hour. The only other bowler to reach the mark was Australian firebrand Jeff Thomson at 160.6 kilometres per hour. He is widely considered the fastest bowler in cricket history. AFP

For a team that has achieved rugby’s Everest, the All Blacks were quick to dampen any overt excitement after beating Australia 34-17 in the World Cup final.

As far as New Zeland captain Richie McCaw was concerned, the All Blacks came into the tournament as world champions and were expected to play like that.

He described his emotion at the end of Saturday’s final at Twickenham as “warm inside and proud of the men I’ve been in battle with”.

Accolades for the All Blacks flooded in as soon as the final whistle went, led by beaten Wallaby coach Michael Cheika.

“New Zealand won fair and square and have been the form team since the last World Cup,” Cheika said. The All Blacks had not only became the first side to win consecutive World Cups, they were also the first team to win the crown three times.

They have been the world’s top-ranked side since 2009 and British bookmakers cannot see that changing soon as they have already installed the New Zealanders as even-money favourites to win the 2019 tournament in Japan.

Steve Hansen made winning the World Cup a focus as soon as he took over as New Zealand head coach after their 2011 success.

But he said after the mission was completed, that win, lose or draw, what mattered most to him was that the team enjoyed themselves.

“I think there’s a lot of people have realised we are not big bad ogres that sometimes we are printed to be in the media,” he said.

“We are just ordinary people who can play rugby reasonably well. Life’s too short not to have fun. If you’re serious all the time it’s pretty boring.”

But Hansen was effusive about the contribution of his retiring stars led by Dan Carter, and possibly 34-year-old McCaw who is undecided about his future.

Test centurions Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock and Ma’a Nonu are also stepping away from internationals as is centre Conrad Smith, a veteran of 94 Tests.

McCaw “is the greatest All Black we’ve ever had, and Dan’s a close second,” Hansen said.

“The only thing that separates them is one’s a flanker (McCaw) and shouldn’t play 148 Test matches. As a flanker that’s unheard of.

“There was a lot of talk going into this game about the loose forward trio,” he said in reference to Wallabies David Pocock, Michael Hooper and Scott Fardy.

– Leader –

“Without wanting to be disrespectful to the other guys who I thought played really well, I thought our trio won that battle and Rico was the leader of our trio.”

McCaw, who has indicated retirement is close, is the world’s most capped player and most successful captain, leading his team to a near 90 percent win rate.

He said his major motivation was to ensure when he does leave he has added something to the number seven jersey.

“No person is bigger than what the team is and your job is to enhance and add something to that legacy,” he said.

“One thing I’ve always been big on is it’s not so much being a hero every week, it’s just doing your job as best you can to serve the team.”

McCaw also led the All Blacks to victory in the 2011 World Cup when they beat France 8-7 in Auckland. “It wa just a massive relief four years ago,” he said referring to the national expectation in rugby-obsessed New Zealand to end a 24-year wait for a second World Cup title to add to their triumph, again on home soil, at the inaugural 1987 edition. “This was an opportunity we really wanted to take,” McCaw explained

Ben Stokes will find himself the centre of attention when England face his native New Zealand in the second Test at Headingley on Friday.

His 85-ball hundred, the fastest Test century ever scored at Lord’s in terms of balls faced, played a key role in turning the tide of the series opener, which England won by 124 runs to go 1-0 up in the two-match contest on Monday.
The 23-year-old had already helped rescue England from the depths of 30 for four in their first innings by making 92 while adding 161 with Joe Root (98).
And, just for good measure, the Durham man, who came to England with his family as a 12-year-old, took three for 38 on Monday’s final day, including the wickets of danger man Kane Williamson and New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum in successive balls.
But Root, like Stokes one of several young players who shone for England at Lord’s including debutant fast bowler Mark Wood, is confident the all-rounder won’t get carried away with the hype that followed his second Test century, which came some 18 months after his first, in Perth.
“He will be fine,” said Root of Stokes.
“When he is batting, he is a free spirit; he goes and plays his shots and puts sides under pressure.
“Even in times of struggle, when we are 30 for four, he came out and put them on the back foot,” vice-captain Root added.
“It will not work every time and could have looked slightly reckless if it didn’t come off.
“The key for him and the rest of us now is to make sure it is not a one-off and go on and do it again this week.”
The first Test was notable too for a marathon innings of 162 by England captain Alastair Cook that left the opener just 32 runs shy of overtaking Essex mentor Graham Gooch’s England Test runs record of 8,900.
So it was no surprise that new England coach Trevor Bayliss, who will take over in time for the Ashes, was heartened by what he had seen.

“I’ve been staying up late into the night watching the last Test at Lord’s to do some research and it’s great to see,” said the Australian.
“I’d much rather come into working with a team that’s on a high.”
For New Zealand, defeat was tough to take as so many of their players had set their hearts on becoming just the second Black Caps side, after the 1999 team, to win a Test at Lord’s.
They also did many of the things that would normally secure a victory, scoring more than 700 runs in the match and taking 20 wickets.
But in the end they were well beaten.

– Turning point –

“It was such a game of punch and counter-punch,” said New Zealand coach Mike Hesson.
“It was really the fourth day that turned it around, we felt we bowled well enough to get three or four wickets in the morning but Alastair Cook and the way Ben Stokes and Joe Root played took the game away from us. That was the turning point.”
Wicket-keeper BJ Watling suffered a knee injury at Lord’s and spent much of the match off the field, with Tom Latham deputising behind the stumps.
“BJ’s not 100 percent, clearly his knee is still an issue. He struggles to push off and get a lot of power so he’s fifty-fifty (to play in the second Test) at this stage,” added Hesson.
Meanwhile New Zealand opener Martin Guptill said the side knew how to bounce back from defeat.
“On the last day (at Lord’s), we just didn’t quite get the batting right,” Guptill said, but said his team had recovered straight away from a big loss before and were capable of doing it at Headingley.
He added: “We showed against Australia, in 2011, winning in Hobart — bouncing back from a heavy defeat in Brisbane.
“I hope we can do that again this week… we’re all raring to go for Friday.”

(India (IND) take on Pakistan (PAK) in their first match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Pool B at Adelaide on Sunday. Catch Live Cricket Scores of the match here)

What a match! India were dominant right from the beginning and it never looked like Pakistan were threatening enough in the game. Virat Kohli roared back into form with a brilliant century — his 22nd in ODI cricket — and one would feel that Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina were unfortunate to not get the big ones today. Apart from the batsmen coming back in form, it was really good from India’s perspective to have their bowlers doing what is required of them.

India maintain their domination as the scoreline against Pakistan is 6-0 now. Pakistan have to look into their approach as they were never confident with the bat. Here’s Nishad Pai Vaidya’sfinal report of the match from the Adelaide Oval of this India vs Pakistan clash.

Bringing you the highlights from India’s sixth straight win over Pakistan in Cricket World Cup history.

Misbah-ul-Haq: The pitch was good, but India played well. Our bowlers came well in the end. 300 was gettable if you batted 50 overs. We have to look forward, can’t focus on this game and not look forward. Have to try and win the next one to get momentum back.

MS Dhoni: I think it was very good performance started by the batsmen. Important to give bowlers of extra 20 runs. Partnership was important as bating over here not easy at it has a invariable pace. Long partnership with Shikhar and virat was crucial. Then Raina consolidated with Virat, which was crucial. 8-10 day break was important. Plus we have had people who have come all the way from India for the match, it all helps as it has helped us in the field. Didn’t like to be over-expressive on the field.

Virat Kohli is Man of the Match for the splendid innings of 107.

Live Score Pakistan 220 in Overs 47: Mohit Sharma continues. Indians are all smiles. It’s all over as India win by 76 runs. 6-0 . Sohail Khan goes for a big stroke but ends up lifting high in their air, and Umesh Yadav takes a simple catch. India win by 76 runs. NOT OUT: Mohammad Irfan 1 (5)

OUT! Sohail Khan c Umesh Yadav b Mohit Sharma 7 (10)

Live Score Pakistan 220/9 in Overs 46: Mohmmad Irfan has come out to bat and Mohammed Shami peppers him with two short balls to start off. Four overs remaining. India need one more wicket to maintain their domination. BATTING: Sohail Khan 4 (7), Mohammad Irfan 0 (2)

Live Score Pakistan 220/9 in Overs 45.4: All over for Pakistan? Shami continues from around the wicket, cramps Misbah for room. The Paksitan captain tries to clear the man at mid-on but Ajinkya Rahane takes a simple catch. BATTING: Sohail Khan 4 (7)

OUT! Misbah-ul-Haq c Ajinkya Rahane b Mohammed Shami 76 (84)

Live Score Pakistan 220/8 in Overs 45: Umesh continues with Sohail on strike. The asking rate is past 15 an over now. BATTING: Misbah-ul-Haq 76 (80), Sohail Khan 4 (7)

Live Score Pakistan 215/8 in Overs 44: Virat Kohli and Sohail Khan have a bit of conversation in the middle. They have a bit of a row going on.

Live Score Pakistan 203/8 in Overs 43 DROPPED! Mohammed Shami fails to grab the ball as it was a very tough chance off Mohit Sharma. Their partnership is of 40 runs now. Misbah is beaten on the final ball of the over as he went for a mighty heave. BATTING: Misbah-ul-Haq 63 (69), Yasir Shah 6 (12)

Live Score Pakistan 188/7 in Overs 39: Umesh Yadav comes on to bowl as MS Dhoni is looking to contain Misbah who is on an aggressive mode now.

Live Score Pakistan 184/7 in Overs 38: Ravindra Jadeja comes on to bowl the 28th over and keeps it very tight to not let the Pakistan batsmen score many runs off him. Misbah and Yasir scramble for three runs in all. BATTING: Misbah-ul-Haq 56 (61), Yasir Shah 4 (7)

Live Score Pakistan 181/7 in Overs 37: First half-century for Pakistan as Misbah-ul-Haq is kind of leading a lone battle here. The Pakistan captain is playing strokes all over the park as he is not looking like giving up easily. BATTING: Misbah-ul-Haq 55 (58), Yasir Shah 2 (4)

Live Score Pakistan 169/7 in Overs 36: Misbah thinks it’s time to take the attack to the opposition as he starts off R Ashwin’s over with a huge six. The final ball is again hit for a boundary as Pakistan are trying to get some quick runs here. BATTING: Misbah-ul-Haq 44 (53), Yasir Shah 1 (3)

Live Score Pakistan 154/7 in Overs 35: Pakistan are falling apart quite quickly here. Tries it again but manages to get a single this time.BATTING: Misbah-ul-Haq 21 (42), Shahid Afridi 21 (20)

The Indian section of the south stand are the most vocal. The Pakistan fans in the easy have gone quiet and understandably so. Batting powerplay taken three overs before it would become mandatory.Mohammed Shami back into the attack as Misbah and Afridi look to steady ship

Live Score Pakistan 134/5 in Overs 31: Mohit Sharma keeps it tight as he tries out a few slower deliveries and both the batsmen are finding it hard to get runs off his bowling.

Live Score Pakistan 109/5 in Overs 26: India are all fired up as Shahid Afridi ducks a bouncer from Umesh Yadav.
