Serena Williams made herself ill after eating dog food hours before reaching the last eight of the Italian Open.

The world number one tried “a spoonful” of food meant for her dog Chip before beating fellow American Christina McHale in straight sets in Rome.

“I thought ‘what the heck, I’m gonna try a piece, it looks good’,” said the 34-year-old.

“Fast forward two hours – I just ran to the toilet like I thought I was going to pass out.”

In a video posted on Snapchat before her match with McHale, Williams explained she sampled a dish of chicken and rice offered on a ‘doggy menu’ at her hotel.

“It did taste weird,” she said. “I force-swallowed it. It tasted kind of like house cleaner. I don’t know what they put in these dog foods, but Chip liked it.

“I don’t think it’s consumable for humans – they should have wrote that! So now I feel really sick. It was just a spoonful but I don’t feel so good.”

Williams recovered in time to defeat McHale 7-6 (9-7) 6-1 and set up a meeting with Svetlana Kuznetsova – who beat fellow Russian Daria Gavrilova – in the last eight.

Serena Williams is celebrating another highlight in her amazing career after winning a record-equalling fourth Laureus World Sports Award. And on a great night for tennis, Novak Djokovic was honoured with the Laureus World Sportsman Award for the second straight year and for the third time in his career.

Serena, the world’s top women’s tennis player, was named Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year again, after a sparkling 2015 in which she won three Grand Slams.

Laureus Academy Member Boris Becker, now Djokovic’s coach, said: “He had a great year again. He’s played 88 matches, has won 82, He won three out of the four Grand Slams, reached the final of the French Open, he’s won seven other tournaments. Very few players, if any, had a year like that.”

There was a special posthumous Laureus Spirit of Sport Award to celebrate the life of Johan Cruyff, who died in March. It was received by his son Jordi Cruyff.

On a glittering evening in Berlin that recognised the outstanding sporting achievements of 2015, rugby was the other big winner with the All Blacks taking the Laureus Team Award and Dan Carter receiving the Laureus Comeback of the Year Award, following the team’s Rugby World Cup success.

Carter said: “It’s nice to be recognised for the year I had in 2015. It was a very special year, not only for me, but also for the All Blacks and to be a part of that was amazing.”

To the delight of the Berlin audience, Germany’s Jan Frodeno, the first man to win both the Ironman World Championship and an Olympic triathlon gold medal, was presented with the Laureus Action Sports Award, while golfer Jordan Spieth won the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year Award. Spieth said: “Thank you so much to the Laureus Academy. Just to know a couple of you is an honour. For me it’s unique. We’re used to being recognised in the golfing community but this Award recognises us around the world to all of sport and it’s something that’s very difficult to put into words.” Brazilian Paralympic swimmer Daniel Dias won his third Laureus Disability Award, another record. Dias, who is one of Brazil’s big hopes for gold medals the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in September, said: “This is another great honour for me and gives me great encouragement, as we are now in the build-up to the Paralympic Games in Rio. To think I have won win three Laureus Awards, something only managed by other sportsmen like Roger Federer, Usain Bolt and Kelly Slater, is quite overwhelming.”

Three-time Formula One world champion Niki Lauda, now Non-Executive Chairman of the Mercedes AMG Petronas team, received the Laureus Lifetime Achievement Award.

Serena Williams, who owns all four tennis Grand Slam titles for the second time in her career, has achieved another historic milestone in the wake of her Wimbledon victory.
The WTA Tour revealed Tuesday that world number one Williams is the first top-ranked player ever with more than twice as many points as her nearest rival.
Records dating to the WTA’s 1973 founding show the 33-year-old American’s domination to be the greatest of any point in the rankings’ history, with Williams on 13,161 points and Russia’s second-ranked Maria Sharapova on 6,490.
In addition to sweeping the US, French and Australian Opens plus Wimbledon over the past 12 months, Williams won last year’s WTA Finals in Singapore and at Miami last March to help build her runaway rankings margin.
Williams beat Sharapova in the Wimbledon semi-finals and downed Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in last Saturday’s final to win her sixth Wimbledon crown and 21st Grand Slam title overall.
That puts Williams one shy of matching Steffi Graf for the Open Era-record of 22 Grand Slam singles crowns and just three shy of Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24.
Williams has won as many Grand Slam titles as all other active women’s players combined, including Sharapova’s five and seven for Venus Williams, Serena’s older sister. Petra Kvitova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Victoria Azarenka have won two major titles each while Samantha Stosur, Ana Ivanovic and Francesca Schiavone own one each.

Serena Williams fired a warning to Maria Sharapova ahead of their Wimbledon semi-final clash as the world number one admitted she saves her best performances for clashes with her fiercest rival.

Williams and Sharapova meet on Thursday in the latest instalment of a bitter rivalry that took root on Centre Court in 2004 and still festers more than a decade later.

Sharapova caused one of the great Wimbledon shocks 11 years ago when, aged just 17, she defeated Serena in the final to claim her first Grand Slam title.

The duo’s relationship has remained frosty ever since, occasionally turning nasty — as it did when they traded barbs about Sharapova dating Williams’ ex-boyfriend Grigor Dimitrov and the American’s own relationship with her French coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

But, while Sharapova has collected five Grand Slam titles and built a global brand that makes her the world’s highest paid female athlete, the 28-year-old has still been left trailing in Serena’s wake and the Russian hasn’t come out on top since 2004.

The 33-year-old American has a 17-2 lead in their head to head record, winning their last 16 meetings and depriving Sharapova of three major titles — in the 2007 and 2015 Australian Open finals and the 2013 French Open final.

Serena has also won all four of her semi-final meetings with Sharapova, defeated the Russian in their previous Wimbledon clash in the last 16 in 2010 and routed her in the 2012 Olympic final at the All England Club. After battling back to defeat Victoria Azarenka 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the last eight — extending her winning run at Grand Slams to 26 matches and her 2015 record to 37-1 — Serena can’t wait to take on Sharapova again. “I love playing Maria. I think she brings out the best in me. I thought we had a wonderful final in Australia. It was very entertaining,” said Serena, who remains on course to hold all four major titles at once and is in the hunt to clinch the first calendar Grand Slam since 1988.

“For me, I don’t feel like I have any pressure going into this match.

“It’s just totally different for me. I don’t have anything to prove. I won all the Grand Slams, multiple times. Now it’s just I’m here just to enjoy it.

“It’s actually making me play better, which is crazy.”

– New match -Sharapova is in her fifth Wimbledon semi-final, and her first since 2011, thanks to a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7 (3/7), 6-2 last eight victory over Coco Vandeweghe.

Asked if her lack of success in the Serena match-up would be weighing on her mind, Sharapova gamely insisted she still relishes the challenge of playing the American.

“I think it’s always a new match. I haven’t had great success against her. I would love to change that around. That’s how I look at it,” the world number four said.

“Definitely no secrets between each other’s games, but it will be an incredible moment for me to step out on Centre Court against her again.

“If you look at Grand Slam champions, you look at their draws, everyone comes from a few challenges, being down in matches. “There’s no easy road to victory. You’re going to have your bumps. That’s the way I see it.”

The other semi-final may end up being overshadowed by Serena v Maria Part 20, but there is still plenty of intrigue in the meeting between Agnieszka Radwanska and Garbine Muguruza. Radwanska defeated Madison Keys 7-6 (7/3), 3-6, 6-3 to reach her fourth Grand Slam semi-final and her third at Wimbledon.

The Polish 13th seed reached the Wimbledon final in 2012, losing to Serena, and she hopes her experience of the latter stages of a major will stand her in good stead against Spanish 20th seed Muguruza, who will be appearing in the last four of a Grand Slam for the first time.

Serena Williams set-up a Wimbledon last-16 showdown with sister Venus on Friday after surviving a major scare as Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova eased into the second week.

Top seed Serena, bidding for a sixth Wimbledon title and already halfway to a calendar Grand Slam after wrapping up the Australian and French Opens, defeated unseeded Briton Heather Watson 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in a Centre Court thriller.
Watson, the world number 59, served for the match at 5-4 in the final set after being a double break up but her nerve failed her against the 33-year-old American she idolized as a child.
“I’ve had some tough losses but that was probably my toughest match playing Heather in front of her home crowd,” said Serena, who is chasing a 21st Grand Slam title.
“She played unbelievable and really I think she should have won the match.”
Venus, also a five-time champion and playing in her 18th Wimbledon, reached the fourth round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic.
Serena will face her 35-year-old sister on Monday for the first time in a Grand Slam since beating her in the 2009 Wimbledon final.
“We have a lot of respect for each other,” said Venus. “There’s no easy points when we face each other.”
Watson admitted her big chance had passed her by.
“I was two points away from winning the match, so I am pretty disappointed,” said the 23-year-old.
Top seed Djokovic made the last 16 for the seventh successive year by routing Bernard Tomic of Australia 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 on the back of 15 aces and 38 winners.
The Serb then faced a different challenge as he walked off Centre Court when he was asked to autograph the prosthetic leg of a wheelchair-bound fan.
“The gentleman gave me his artificial leg…I want to be politically correct about it,” smiled the 29-year-old Djokovic who next faces South Africa’s Kevin Anderson.
“I gave him my signature. I hope it will make him feel better.”
Fourth seeded Maria Sharapova, the 2004 champion, made the last 16 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu and goes on to tackle unseeded Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan for a spot in the quarter-finals.
Raonic, Dimitrov out
Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, who famously defeated Rafael Nadal in 2014 when he was ranked 144, avenged his quarter-final loss of 12 months ago to seventh seed Milos Raonic with a 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 victory.
The 20-year-old Kyrgios hit 34 aces and blasted 61 winners past the 2014 semi-finalist as he booked a fourth round clash with France’s Richard Gasquet.
Kyrgios, seeded 26, faces another rematch in the fourth round against Gasquet after beating the Frenchman in a dramatic five-setter in the second round last year.
Gasquet, a 2007 semi-finalist and seeded 21, beat 11th seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria for the fifth time in five meetings thanks to a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 stroll.
Fourth seed Stan Wawrinka reached the fourth round with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Fernando Verdasco for his first win over the Spaniard in 10 years. The French Open champion will take on Belgium’s David Goffin.
Goffin, the 16th seed, became only the fourth Belgian man to make the fourth round in the Open Era by defeating 2006 semi-finalist Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
US Open champion Marin Cilic, the ninth seed, was locked in a titanic struggle with John Isner, the 17th seed, when their clash was halted for bad light at 9:20pm (2020GMT).
The two were level at 7-6 (7/4), 6-7 (6/8), 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 10-10 after more than four hours on Court One with the winner to face American wildcard Denis Kudla, the world 105, for a place in the quarter-finals.
America’s Coco Vandeweghe reached the last 16 at a Slam for the first time with a 6-2, 6-0 win over 2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur of Australia.
Stosur has yet to get beyond the third round at Wimbledon in 13 years of trying.
Vandeweghe will next face Czech sixth seed Lucie Safarova, who beat Sloane Stephens of the United States 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Teenager Belinda Bencic became the first Swiss woman into the fourth round since Patty Schnyder in 2007 when she defeated American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands 7-5, 7-5 after trailing 5-1 in the first set.
Former world number one and two-time semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka made the last 16 with a 6-4, 6-4 win over France’s Kristina Mladenovic and next faces Bencic.

Serena Williams is adamant she can cope with the pressure of going for a calendar Grand Slam as she eyes the third leg of the historic achievement at Wimbledon.

Williams has swept to Australian and French Open triumphs over the last six months and the world number one returns to the All England Club within two major titles of becoming the first woman since Steffi Graf in 1988 to claim the four top titles in one year.

The 33-year-old American also won the US Open to end 2014 on a high and is heavy favourite to continue that dominant run by taking the Wimbledon title for the sixth time in her illustrious career.

Her march to a momentous milestone has captured the public’s attention and Serena knows the eyes of the sporting world will be on her over the next fortnight.

But she insists she will have no problems with the extra attention and expectation because her mental toughness is a bigger strength than even her booming serve and over-powering groundstrokes.

“Personally it doesn’t make it feel any different, which I think is a good thing because I don’t feel any pressure to win all four,” Williams told reporters at Wimbledon on Saturday.

“I really don’t feel that pressure. Maybe if I would happen to win here, then maybe I might start feeling it after that.

“But for me being mentally tough is probably my biggest strength.

“Being the youngest of five children really made me have to scrap and be tougher.

“It’s great to have a big serve, too. Ultimately you could be the best player in the world, but you still get down and you have to be able to come back.”

(AFP) Serena Williams battled illness and fierce heat to reach a third French Open final Thursday, defeating Timea Bacsinszky to move one win away from a 20th Grand Slam title.

The world number one and Paris champion in 2002 and 2013 was clearly distressed for large parts of her semi-final.
She trailed by a set and a break in the second before racing to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win, reeling off the last 10 games.
The 33-year-old American goes on to face Czech 13th seed Lucie Safarova, who beat Ana Ivanovic 7-5, 7-5, in Saturday’s final where victory will put her just two Grand Slam titles behind Steffi Graf’s Open record of 22.
Friday’s result was tough on Swiss 23rd seed Bacsinszky who was making a living washing dishes and working in hotels just two years ago during an injury-enforced absence from the tour.
“I have never felt so sick,” Williams told US broadcaster ESPN.
“I caught the flu after my third round match and have been struggling ever since. I never thought I could win and I didn’t want to go to a third set.
“But I thought that if I was going to lose I had better go for winners. I was so tired and the next thing I knew I was in a third set. I don’t know what happened.”
On her prospects for Saturday’s final, she added: “I just hope I can get better from here.”
Williams has now reached a 24th major final, having come back from a first-set deficit four times at the tournament.
She was all business as usual in her first two service games, giving up just a single point.
But Bacsinszky wasn’t intimidated and broke for 3-2 with a searing crosscourt backhand off a Williams’ second serve which could have been lifted from the American’s playbook.
Williams, who went into the tie having lost just three of her 26 Grand Slam semi-finals, was clearly suffering in the 29-degree heat.
Her breathing was laboured, she wearily demanded more and more ice-towels during changeovers and was looking increasingly disorientated.
The blonde Swiss outsider had nothing to lose and played like it.
Having started a college course in hotel management during her absence from the tour, Bacsinszky was revelling in her moment in the sun, as fierce as it was on Court Philippe Chatrier.
She saw two set points disappear and then face down a break point in the 10th game but wrapped up the opener when Williams overhit an easy forehand drive.
Bacsinszky’s 16 winners were twice as many as her opponent, perfectly illustrating the requirement that attack is the only option against the American superstar whatever her state of mind.
Williams fought off five break points in the fifth game of the second set but was broken when she fired a desperate backhand wide.
At the changeover, Williams’s coughing spurts became so loud that they echoed around the arena courtesy of the courtside microphones.
But somehow she dug deep, retrieved the break and then raced away with the second set having won four straight games.
Rejuvenated, the top seed broke for 1-0 in the decider, backed it up with a double break for 3-0 and again for 5-0 as Bacsinszky wilted.
The contest was over when the Swiss fired a loose backhand having won just 12 points in the entire final set.
