Isipathana College, who failed to defend their league title, will be desperate to beat Trinity College, Kandy when the two teams meet in the Milo President’s Trophy Knockout semi final match at Royal Sports Complex this evening.
The lads from Havelock Town maintained an unbeaten record until their last league game, which they lost to Royal College, who eventually clinched the title. Pathana however, will still be the favourites to win the knockouts, especially with Royal expected to field a second string side during this particular tournament.
The team from the Hill Capital on the other hand will travel to Reid Avenue with a point to prove. They haven’t had an awful season, but they haven’t done much either this time around. Last year of course they were in the title race until the final week and did win the Bradby. The expectations are always high on a team like that and if they do end the season without a trophy that would certainly be a disappointment.
Omalka Gunaratne’s team would look to capitalize on their backs, who in comparison to Trinity are very experienced. Two wing three quarters Dilan Gallage and Asitha Punchihewa have performed well this season. Place kicking still appears to be their problem although fly half Isuru Koongahawatte had a few decent matches. Captain Gunaratne himself hasn’t been in very good form in recent weeks. He was marked very well by most teams and he’d want to score more tries than he has in the last five weeks.
Isipathana will play this match without their coach Nilfer Ibrahim who has been handed a one-match touchline ban by Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA).
Trinity are far from being a one-man team, but their full back Saranga Gunatilake’s contributions have been quite instrumental whenever they succeeded. He has scored nine tries so far.
Isipathana XV (Probables): Sachin Dulshan, Nisal Deshantha, Lahiru Vishwajith, Chathura Dilshan, Matheesha Sarathchandra, Wageesha Weerasinghe, Dilan Devinda, Omalka Gunaratne (captain), Harsha Maduranga and Isuru Koongahawatte, Asitha Punchihewa, Kushan Indunil, Sumudu Anuradha, Dilan Gallage, Rehan de Silva
Trinity XV (Probables): Ghazail Ismail, Nethmal Sakalasooriya, Nathan Yee, Rahul Karunatilake, Sajith Roshan, Rukshan Dhammapala, Anuka Boyogoda, Isuru Rangala (captain), A. Bandara and Thisila Perera, Sanishka Abeywickrama, Ryan Weerakoon, D. Hettige, Saranga Gunatilake

The first round of the Schools Rugby League reached its final week and the match that drew interest was the Brady between Trinity and Royal.

This match was a prestige battle for more reasons than one. Besides, it will also decided the number one and two slots in the Schools Group B of segment no 1.

Further its also the first leg of the Bradby Shield which is an important event in the history of these schools. The school league so far has provided little entertainment and this game however drew large crowds to Kandy.

After the results of the games this week will be known as this column is read and who wins the top slot and the first leg will be known.

What will be more important to the supporters of both teams will be the result of the first leg than the league.

Before the kick off – Trinity principal Brig. Udaya Ariyartne (Rtd) introduced the teams and the match officials to the Chief Guest Janaka Kiridene who captained Trinity in 1978 along with Royal Principal Upali Gunasekara in the traditional manner.

Royal College team went unbeaten in the first round, in their segment with a well deserved victory against Trinity College. On the whole I think the Royalist should be very pleased the manner in which they played the game last Saturday at the Trinity College Rugby stadium at Pallekelle.

From the kick off they played to a set plan dominating all phases of the game with excitement and enthusiasm.

They displaced the basics – in the correct manner concentrating on attack at every opportunity, keeping the ball in possesion, with clever passes and advancing forward to score. Although they played well in the first half they failed to add points to their scoreboard.

Royal had the major share of the ball but were unable to make moves and convert them into points. The Royalist were marginally better placed because they were more accurate and disciplined in play and the handling was exceptional.

The forwards had the better of the game which enabled them to get a grip on the game and also gave them the points as well. Actually It was the Royal forwards who won them the game. They outplayed the opponents in the line outs, scrums, loose mauls etc.

Two vital mistakes Royal made in the first half was when they allowed Trinity to intercept and score to lead initially. Only after the break Royal got their act together to get on winning street.

Royalist were on a high after their 23-22 triumph in the first leg of the Bradby shield game in Kandy. In this game both were on even terms like last year, but the Royalist were fortunate to go away with a win after four conservative years of defeat.

The score reveals the true nature of the game just how tough it was last year in particular. The margins were tight throughout with one team knocking off the other in seemingly significant fashion. Right from the opening it was good rugby and this game was a delight to watch.

So, the conditions are obviously going to be tough in the second leg, which is scheduled for the 23rd of this month at the Royal College Sports Complex. The coaches will go all out to do their best to groom the boys for the next event. However, they may not like it, but it will make the most compelling drama to give the game a firecracker finish.

The Trinitians have to admit their disappointment, where they failed to use the right options at the right moment. It was also observed that when a penalty was awarded they took time to decide and often looked at the coaches probably for instructions.

Two vital penalty kicks within kicking range were missed and another was kicked to touch. If the right decision was made it would have helped them to turn the game their way. Of course, they could do it in the return provided they plan well and play to their potential which seemed lacking in Pallekele.

The present side has all the experience, rugby knowledge, with an abundance of facilities to performance, with the best coaching talent. Whatever is said and done, we do not rule out that Trinity did not play well. Their defense was exceptional which kept the high riding Royal players at bay. They matched them, but what they lacked was decision making, when trailing. They must add more points when the opportunity is there, particularly when penalties came their way.

Like in cricket where it is said “catches win matches” in rugby also one can say “Penalties win matches”. A penalty and kick at goal struck the upright, where they lost five points.

Trinitians failed to have a platform to really launch their game but they never gave up. They’ve got powerful runners, but in this game they failed in attack. However, they tackled well, stopping the Royal backs from going through with their powerful athletic potential. The energy coming from their team – they just need to channel it bettter. Hope they will do it in the second leg.

Finally the Royalists wanted to break the “Pallekelle” hoodoo and they did this time by scoring a goal, two tries and two penalty kicks at goal, Trinity replied with two goals, a try and a penalty kick at goal. It was an exciting final as both teams were seen playing good and clean rugby.

But in the end there could only be one winner.

Trinity entertained the home crowd by scoring first, at the end of the first quarter when scrum half Anuk Boyagoda scored a good try and Surnaga Guantialke converted it which gave the Trinitians a 7-0 lead.

A few minutes Royal’s Ovin Askey slotted a penalty to give them three points. Both sides came out aggressively with each having opportunities of scoring.

Both teams played great attacking rugby and had their moments of strong defense. In the end it was the perseverance of the Royalist in the final moments to stay cool and make the right decisions to earn the win in front of a record crowd.

Whatever the secret of its recent appeal rugby has always been most popular game at Trinity College, Kandy since it was first introduced in 1906, and strongly follow their Motto (Respica Finem) which means “Look to the end” so the 2nd Leg is bound to be most exciting with just one point lead in the 1st Leg.

Tikiri Marambe, a well known personality in the rugby arena, was seen over here in Kandy helping his old school Trinity College at practices, before the key Bradby game. He was handling the halves combination. An experienced guy on this aspect of the game, he was seen helping out last season too.
Tikiri as he is called by his friends (some call him Tikka), learnt his rugby at Trinity College and Combined Schools, and later played for CR and FC, Air Force and Defence Services. He also led the Air Force and Defence Services, and also a few games at the 1986 Asiad in Hong Kong when regular skipper Hisham Abdeen was injured after the Japan game.. After hanging up his boots, he got into coaching.
During his school days he was a top class scrum half and paired off with Irwin Howie under the leadership of Shafie Jainudeen. He also played under Sam Samarasekara and Y.S. Ping.
Tikiri was one time the Chairman of Selection Committee of the SLRFU, and on and off the field he has given his best for the game of rugby.

Saturday 9th of May is going to be the 71st Bradby Shield Rugby encounter at Pallekele Stadium, Kandy. It will also serve as a Division I, Segment 1 “B” Schools League Rugby Tournament fixture and it should be a close match as both teams are unbeaten. The ‘2nd Leg’ of the encounter will be played on 23rd May at the Royal Sports Complex, Colombo.

The ‘Bradby’ tally – Trinity 39 wins to Royal’s 30 and there was one ‘tie’.

The first encounter will be played under the patronage of 1978 Trinity skipper Janaka Kiridena and the second leg, it is the turn of 1974 captain Brumon Akbar, but Akbar is ‘no more’ and the next senior player of that team Rambinal Samarasinghe will grace the game.

The ‘Bradby Shield’ encounter – commonly known as ‘The Bradby’ is the Blue-Ribbon of the Schools Rugby.

But unfortunately, on same day at Nittawela, Kandy St. Anthony’s College will host S. Thomas’ College, and at Bogambara, another game – Dharmaraja vs Science College will take place.

Rugby at three venues
It is somewhat disturbing fact for rugby fans that the matches have been divided into three venues. This has never happened before when the ‘Bradby’ is played at one town and other games are fixed for another day merely to allow both spectators and school students an opportunity to witness the ‘Bradby’ which usually draws around a 20,000 and over rugby spectators.

So, It’s going to be an exciting game of rugby, the Trinity vs Royal encounter. One hour before the ‘Bradby’ will be the game between the two under 18 teams for the Simithrarachie Trophy, which was donated by an Old Trinitian George Hemachandra. The ‘Rugger Ball’ organised by the TCK OBA (Kandy Branch) headed by M.M.M. Sulaiman and his committee will take place at Suiss Hotel, this dinner dance which has been traditionally after the ‘Kandy leg’ of the Bradby encounter is eagerly awaited by the two teams.

Today, Sri Lanka is the only country in Asia in which one of the British imports “Rugby” of the Colonial era rugby which has survived over 136 year-old history dating back to 1879.

Trinity College took to rugby in 1906 under Rev. A.G. Fraser. At that time no other school played rugby up to 1920. During this period, Trinity had to be satisfied with matches with scratch Ceylonese teams with masters, all Englishmen also helping the school.

Though the Kingswoodians started rugby in 1891, they gave up in 1906, after the first inter-school match against Trinity.

Royal Principal Reed brought Rugby to school

Royal took to rugby in 1920 with the arrival of Principal H.L. Reed, with only a few months of training, the Royalists challenged the experienced Trinitians. Royal gave up Association Football to take up Rugby. So, the Trinitians with no other opponents at school level gladly accepted Royal’s offer. Some disease in Kandy nearly stopped the match, the Trinitians readily agreed to travel down to Colombo. But they had to keep some of their stalwarts behind as there was the key Stubbs Shield Boxing Meet on the same day. On 31st of July 1920, Trinitians were seen at the Royal College grounds at Thurstan Road, the present University Grounds.

In this first game, Trinity beat Royal by 26 points to nil. The two teams were made up of players (For Trinity): C. David, E.M. Lalyett, A.P. Maralande, N. Moomnemalle, L.C. de Mel, H.R.V. Johnston, V.C. Shockman, J.L.C. Periers (Capt), C.E. Weereumal, C. Wells, S. Thirunavkarasu, A.P. Kandasamy, W. Wettasinghe, A.W. Mayanga.

Referee A.C. Houlder.
(For Royal) E.C. Rose, E.N.I. Jonklass, A. Speldewinde, P. Batholomeuse, M. Morgan, C.G.A. Perera (Capt), T. Tweed, D.R. Rutnam, C.H. Hettiarachchi, S.C. Blok, H. Vancuylenberg, E.K. de Vos, G. Senaratne, A. de Bruin, H. Sansoni.

Then in 1945, for this game, the Royal’s Principal Mr. E.L. Bradby who was leaving presented a shield in order to revive the dying interest in the game. Around this time these two schools together with Zahira College and St. Peter’s College were in the game, and these two schools had to keep away due to the war. So, at that time only the Colombo Rugger Club (an amalgamation of all the Colombo sides, the University, Royal and Trinity were still in it.

Bradby Shield Rugby came in after war
After the war, the Bradby Shield has taken pride of place in the school rugby calendar. The Shield was introduced, and the winner was decided on aggregate of points of the two games played, that was one in Kandy and the other in Colombo.

When this suggestion came from E.L. Bradby, the Trinity principal at that time was C.E. Simithraaratchy who readily agreed. There was one person who objected to the Bradby, that is the 1945 Trinity coach Philip Buultjens.

At that time, it was only two schools who were involved in the game, and it was felt that playing for a trophy would help to stimulate the dying interest in the game and Philip Buultjens objection was overturned.

The first Bradby Shield game was played at Racecourse grounds. Royal were led by C.D.L. Fernando and Trinity by Robert Sourjah. The ‘first leg’ was played in Colombo and the Royalist were the winners 3-0 (one try). The ‘second-leg’ was played at Bogambara, and in that game Trinitians were led by S.B. Pilapitya, and Trinity beat Royal led by C.D.L. Fernando by 6-0 ( two tries), and with this win, Trinitians managed to win the shield in the inaugural year, on the basis of aggregate.

On 23rd July 1948, Royal captain gets a Telegram through Cable and Wireless Ltd, addressed to M.A.A. Cader – Royal College, Colombo, BEST CONGRATULATIONS TO ROYAL FIFTEEN ON DOUBLE VICTORY OVER TRINITY = FROM E.L. BRADBY.
