Cherantha and Erandi best schools sports stars

Emerging swimmer Cherantha de Silva of Ananda College Colombo was adjudged the most outstanding Sportsman while star TT player Erandi Warusawithana from Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda was adjudged the best Sportswoman in the 23rd Milo Sri Lanka Schools Colours Award Ceremony held at Nelum Pokuna Theatre yesterday.

They were selected out of 11 nominees who vied for the main award . The other top sports stars were Udaya Ranasinghe(Vidyartha Kandy), Himasha Eshan(Kalutara V.), Buwaneka Gunatilleke (Richmond Galle), Tharindu Dewasiri (St.Joseph Vaz, Wennappuwa), Vidusha Lakshani (Newstead Negombo), Nadeera Jayasekara(Colombo Int’l School), Thilini Hendahewa (Visakha Colombo), Pooja Suraweera (Visakha BV Sapugaskanda), Tiumi Yashora(Visakha Colombo).

Cherantha de Silva who clocked 25.36 seconds in the Sri Lanka National Short Course Meet in Kandy last year , broke the 50m national record of 25.44 seconds set by Conrad Francis in 2003.

More than 600 school sports personnel received awards. Royal College, Colombo was adjudged the victorious school for winning the most number of awards in 2014.

Budding athlete Anuradha Vidushanka of St.Mary’s College Kegalle was adjudged as the best emerging sportsman while Hansani Piumila Kapugeekiyana of Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo was picked as the best emerging sportswoman.

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam graced the occasion as the chief guest while Nestle Lanka PLC Managing Director Shivani Hegde, its Assistant Vice President(Corporate Affairs and Communications) Bandula Egodage, Nestle Lanka PLC Assistant Vice President(Beverages) Norman Kannangara, Education Ministry Secretary Upali Marasinghe, Education Ministry Director (Sports and Physical Activities) B.A.Abeyratne, Education Ministry Additional Secretary H.U.Prematilleke were the guests of honour. Sports officials, parents and other guests were also present.
