Annual Central Province Athletic Championship
Thirteen meet records were broken while one was equalled at the Annual Central Province Athletic Championship which is now in progress at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy, organised by the Department of Education of the Central Province.
“Over 4,000 athletes are in action at this championship, including some from the remotest part of Central Province including Kiriwana Eliya close to Adams Peak and Wasgamuwa in Hettipola”, said the Director of Physical education and Sports Athula Jayawardena. The Olympic flame was brought from Namini Oya School in Wasgamuwa in Olympic style through over 50 towns in the Province.
The records which were broken so far are;
Girls Under 21 800 metres: Naomi Jayasundera (A. Ratnayake MMV) 2.21.2 mts.
Under 19 girls pole vault: Yasunan Dulanja (Ambagamuwa MMV) 3.8 metres.
Under 17 pole vault girls: P.A.S. Deepani (A. Ratnayake MMV) 3.10 metres.
Under 21 girls pole vault: P.G.S. Ruwanthika (A. Ratnayake MMV) 3.20 metres.
Under 21 girls high jump: R.P.G.W.P. Harischandra (Dheerananda MMV, Menidiwela) 1.60 metres.
Under 19 girls high jump: Krithika Ratnaswara (Kandy Girls High School) 1.50 metres equalled meet records.
Under 19 girls 400 metre hurdles: R.W.D. Dilrukshi (Ambagamuwa MMV) 1.07.1 metres.
Under 21 boys pole vault: R.A.D.B. Dinusha Kumar Munasinghe (A. Ratnayake MMV) 4.10 metres.
Under 19 boys 100 metres: A.R.C. Weerawardena (St. Anthony’s College, Kandy) 49.2 seconds.
Under 17 boys discuss throw: S.W.P. Bavantha (Weerakeppetipola Vidyalaya, Matale) 43.47 metres.
Under 19 discuss throw: H.B.M.Y.P.B. Herath (Sri Sumangala College) 49.95 metres.
Under 800 metres boys: D.M.H.S. Karunaratne (A. Ratnayake MMV), 2.02.4 metres.
Boys Under 18 800 metres: A.R.C. Weerawardena (St. Anthony’s College, Kandy) 1.58.6 metres.
Under 17 boys 400 metres relay: Trinity College – 4.458 metres.
Under 15 boys 100 metres relay: St. Anthony’s College and Dharmaraja College joined winner – 4.8.4 minutes.
