Akbo and Diliki win gold for Sri Lanka at Special Olympics….

Diliki Fernado and Akbo Jayawsardena brought fame for Sri Lanka when they clinched gold medals at the Special Olympics 2015 in Los Angeles, USA.

Diliki Fernando won the first gold medal for Sri Lanka at the event when she finished first in women’s 400m Division 08 with a time of 01 minute 20.10 seconds.

Akbo Jayawardena secured the gold in the men’s 100m Division 60, clocking 19.15 seconds.

Mayooran Arasakulasooriyan competed in the 100m Division 51 (23.06 seconds) and Manojan Jeyachandran competed in 100m Division 59 (18.27seconds) but could not make any impact.

S. Prithika Ampegama ran in the women’s 800m Division 02 and finished the race with a time of 54.26 seconds in the preliminary round but that was not sufficient for her to advance.

Sureka Gammadegama competed in women’s Division 10 and finished the event with 16.68 seconds. She is expected to compete in Long Jump Division F12 and Long Jump Division F06 as well.

S. Prithika Ampegama will compete in women’s 1500 m which is scheduled to commence at 9.30 pm Sri Lanka time tomorrow.

Sri Lanka fielding seven athletes at the games and the contingent also includes three coaches and two officials.
