Singer Trophy U19 schools cricket

Dineth Madurawala, the Josephian top order batsman came to their rescue with a gutsy batting performance to earn his school a honourable draw against Thurstan College in the Singer Trophy Under 19 inter-schools cricket tournament match played at Thurstan grounds Reid Avenue yesterday.

Shot out for their lowest ever total of 23, the Josephians were looking down the barrel of defeat at 84-4 when play began on the second day yesterday – still trailing by 120 with only six second innings wickets in hand.

But Madurawala led a splendid fightback aided by Shevan Fonseka (44), Pahan Perera (42), and Jehan Daniel (21) to deny the Thurstanites a win that looked certain after fast bowler Charana Nanayakkara had set it up for them with a match haul of 11 wickets.

Strangely enough Nanayakkara who took all his wickets on the first day failed to add to his tally yesterday.

His bowling along with the rest of the Thurstan line up was blunted by Madurawala who batted the entire day to remain unbeaten on 144 scored off 361 balls inclusive of 19 fours and a six. Thanks to his spirited innings St Joseph’s finished their second innings at 315 for nine when the match ended.

While Madurawala was performing his heroics at Reid Avenue, Krishan Sanjula of De Mazenod carved out the highest score of the ongoing school season so far when he compiled a brilliant 253 against Maliyadeva Kurunegala at Kandana. Sanjula struck 27 fours and eight sixes in his 249-ball innings.

His score of 253 came out of a total of 322. The match was drawn. D.S. Senanayake College registered a nine-wicket win over Anuradhapura Central College at Anuradhapura and newcomers St. Peter’s College Negombo beat St. Xavier’s College Marawila by 150 runs at Wennappuwa.

There were also wins for Christ King College Ja-Ela who beat Galahitiyawa Central College by five wickets at Ja-Ela and St. John’s College Panadura who beat P. de S. Kularatne MV Ambalangoda by four wickets at Panadura.

Amongst the runs were Kamindu Mendis (Richmond), Sahan Suraweera (Ananda) and Sammu Ashan (Ananda) who all made a century apiece while Madhuranga Siriwardhana of St. Peter’s Negombo had a match bag of 12 wickets against St. Xavier’s Marawila. Ashan performed a rare match double against Wesley by scoring a century and taking five wickets in an innings.
