Javelin Queen Nadeeka Lakmali returned a seasonal best of 59:00 m even though she missed her second consecutive IAAF World Championship qualification from just 2 metres at the Army Volunteer Forces athletics championship which started at Diyagama yesterday.
Lakmali who faced a setback during the last Asian Championship finishing fourth with 52.29 points came back hard in a lone battle where second placed Dilhani Lekmage threw only 53.86m. She will have her last chance for the world showpiece later this month at the National Championship.
Meanwhile, N.A. Bandara of SLLI won the men’s 500m with 15 minutes 06.9 seconds performance while former National champion Milantha Dissanayake jumped a seasonal best of 7.52 m in the men’s long jump to seal the gold.
The only meet record came from S.M. Amarasinghe in the women’s Hammer Throw where she threw 42.57 which is just 0.27 m behind the National record.
Milantha Dissanayake returned a 2:10m leap in the men’s high jump to seal the gold, while M.S. Gamage won the women’s Shot Put with 10.71m. National champion Indunil Herath won the men’s 800m while Nadeesha
Ramanayake sealed the women’s 800m.
