Isipathana College kept their unbeaten record.
Isipathana College kept their unbeaten record intact by earning a hard-fought victory over Kingswood College Kandy by 32 points (2 goals, 3 tries, and 1 penalty) to 22 points (2 goals, 1 try, and 1 penalty) in their inter-school Division 1 U-20 League tournament rugby match which was worked off yesterday at Bogambara Grounds in Kandy.
Both schools started off proceedings with a good brand of rugby, and in the second minute of play Isipathana Captain and number eight Omalka Gunarathna scored a try for Isipathana and the conversion was fluffed by fly half Isuru Kongahawaththa to make the score 5 nil in favour of Isipathana.
However, within the space of eight minutes Kingswood opened scoring with a penalty put over by their Captain Reeza Rafaideen to make the score 5-3.
In the 21st minute of play, Isipathana winger Asitha Punchihewa scored a try which was goaled by their fly half Isuru Kongahawaththa to increase the score line to 12 –3.
Within the space of four minutes Kingswood closed the gap to just two points when their hard working flanker Srinath Wimalaweera went over the line for a well earned try and Captain Rafaideen made the conversion. Isipathana 12 – Kingswood 10.
Just before half-time, Isipathana scored again when off a line out they secured possession and worked their line beautifully to Dilshan to Omalka to winger Dillan Gallege, who scored a fantastic try brushing off several Kingswood defenders while covering a good distance. Fly half Kongahawaththa made the conversion to increase the lead to 17-10 at half time.
In the seventh minute of the second half Isipathana received a penalty and their captain Omalka took a short tap and went through the entire Kingswood defense to score a try, converted by fly half Kongahawaththa. Score Pathana 24 Kingswood 10.
Kingswood reduced the lead to just two points when they scored two back to back tries through their flanker Srinath Wimalaweera and number eight Senesh Weerasinghe. Captain Rafaideen converted one of the tries to close the gap to 24-22 in favour of Isipathana.
As the game got into an anticlimax, Isipathana got a penalty in the 26th minute of play, which was put over by Kongahawaththa to increase the Pathana lead to 27 – 22.
In the 37th minute, Isipathana sealed the match when off a scrum Omalka Gunarathna went on the blind side passing several Kingswood defenders and before he was brought down inches away from the try line but managed to give a fantastic off load to his hard working flanker Wageesha Weerasinghe who went over the line. The conversion was missed by Kongahawaththa and the green shirts remained unbeaten in the first round by beating Kingswood 32 points to 22.
